Fig Technologies wants industry research on gender and work-life attitudes to present an overview of the position of project managers in two geographic areas. You will present this report in a two-page (excluding the title and reference pages) assessment of the position based on information available. In your report, be sure to address the issues below.

Analyze the demographics of gender in the workplace with regard to position, pay, and expectations.

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of flexible schedules and work responsibilities.

Determine the potential human resources benefits of offering child and elder care in the organization.

Explain work-life balances regarding achieving greater results for the organization.

Labor Law Reform

Question A

Is it time for U.S. labor law to be reformed? If so, what changes are necessary? What intellectual school of thought (e.g., mainstream economics, human resource management, etc.) underlies these changes?

Question B

U.S. law mandates basic democratic procedures within unions including election provisions. Many national leaders are regularly re-elected while there is greater turnover of leaders at the local level. What explanation can you give for this?

First, read this article: Nissan To Produce New Crossover Based On Kicks Concept. Also review “Establishment of the ‘Nissan Way’” (Figure 3, within Chapter 11, Section 4.2.3 in your textbook). 

Then, compare the “Nissan Way” organizational culture with the Brazilian jeitinho cultural trait as discussed in our Module Three reading. 

Now consider both of these cultural concepts working in tandem with each other. Identify one Nissan Way value and one jeitinho value that you believe would work well together. Also select one Nissan Way value and one jeitinho value that you believe could create dissonance or organizational conflict. 

Note that this is a challenge that Nissan currently faces, as in 2016, Nissan announced that it would begin producing a new crossover that will be sold globally, starting with Latin American markets. 

Following an investment of $192 million (U.S. dollars), the Nissan Kicks will be produced at Nissan’s Resende Industrial Complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The facility was inaugurated in 2014 and currently produces compact vehicles March and Versa. After the start of production, Nissan expects to hire 600 new employees.

Application: Design-Build

Floods, storms, landslides, earthquakes, and many other types of natural disasters can leave an affected area without the ability to evacuate or to receive needed provisions. For example, transportation was severely limited on the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina due to the destruction of major highways and bridges. Several communities became “islands” due to the destruction of these bridges. Because people could not leave or receive needed materials and goods, a different approach was applied to re-building the highways and bridges there.

Design/Build was the process used, and this provided for the quick rebuilding of three major bridges. This process contrasts with Design/Bid/Build and combines the design, permit, and construction into one overlapping process. Design/Build involves hiring the same designer/contractor to oversee a project’s design, bid, and construction. This process was so successful in Mississippi that the first bridge built, the St. Louis Bay Bridge, won an America Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Transportation Award in 2007. Might this same process be applied to disaster recovery when re-establishing communication, business and industry, housing, and human services?
