Differences of opinion with a co-worker. Disagreements with your significant other. Arguments with relatives or friends. What do each of these scenarios have in common? Your ability to manage conflict is either effective or ineffective. How do you know if it’s effective or ineffective, and how can you learn from it? In this first discussion for the final week, you will consider areas of strength and improvement associated with your own style of conflict management based on your own experiences.

Read Chapter 11 from The Interpersonal Communication Book; answer the 10 true/false statements regarding your interpersonal conflict behavior (p. 297 – 298). Then, review your results and consider whether your interpersonal conflict management skills are effective or ineffective.

Hello Class,

With the onset of COVID-19, one side of the family decided to create a Marco Polo group for just the family. Marco Polo is a practical and private communication tool unlike typical social media. It is Video communication with anyone at anytime just like a text. Though most of the family lives in Georgia, we visit with each other often and vacation together yearly. Through Marco polo we can communicate and see each other while still safely quarantining. A social group provides feelings of love, appreciation, and caring by and for others (Stangor, 2016). Thankfully, technology has provided a way to maintain our family social group. In our family Marco polo group we share our feelings of the current situation while providing advice or clarity on specific topics without judgement. We have celebrated birthdays, worked on projects and shared stories as our way to stay connected at any time of the day. As the far away cousin, I was the organizer of the group and am grateful to chat with the family more than ever. Our common goal is to stay connected and continue to interact as we always have. A wine fairy delivers wine every week to each household and we have wine tastings together. Bingo cards have been delivered to everyone in our group and we have family bingo night. At least with Marco polo only one conversation happens at a time, which is never the case when we are together.

Case Analysis unit 3 and 4

Taking Sides Analyses (50%)

You will write a two – three page analysis for each of 10 of the 18 issues discussed in the textbook.  While you are free to choose which issues you would like to write about you must write about at least one of the issues in each of the five units.  Each analysis will be worth up to five points and should be a minimum of two full pages in length and no longer than three pages in length.  The analyses must be single-spaced (not 1.15, which is the default setting for recent versions of Word) and printed using Times New Roman, size 12 font, with 1.25 inch margins on the sides and 1 inch margins on the top and bottom (Office 2003 default in Margin settings in Page Layout on the Word header).  Also, please do not use any space saving techniques such as adding extra space between paragraphs (the first sentence of each paragraph should be indented), using bulleted or numbered items, using sub-titles or footnotes, including diagrams and tables, or including anything other than the article number and your name at the top of your review. You will not receive full credit for a review that has more than a few grammatical errors.  Your grade on the review will be reduced if you do not follow these technical requirements.  A minimum of one full page of each analysis should include a summary of the two articles related to the issue.  Then, a minimum of one full page of each analysis should contain your analysis of BOTH the strengths and the weaknesses of BOTH of the two articles and your opinion regarding the issue (please use the terms “strength” and “weakness” when writing this part of the analysis.  Your analyses should be submitted to me as Word attachments to either Blackboard Message or email messages to me. The deadlines for the postings are listed below.  You do not have to wait until the deadline to submit an analysis.

crisis management application

Application: Crisis Plan—Evaluation and Analysis

Strategies and elements of a crisis plan should be reviewed periodically to ensure they are up-to-date and to add possible solutions learned from recent crisis experiences. Evaluating a crisis plan typically involves examination of “what went right and what went wrong.” Changes that evolve from the evaluation process can include changes in leadership that result from failure to execute strategies and/or legal and ethical issues. Responding procedures may undergo changes because even “what went right” may be improved upon or expanded. Furthermore, resources may be updated because they are usually problematic for implementing any plan, particularly for a disaster of enormous scope. Financial considerations may be evaluated as well, and national, state, and local foundations and government agencies/departments may respond to revisions by providing resources in the form of grants to individuals or organizations. Plans and grants should continually be reviewed and renewed through this cycle of analysis.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Thinking about Hurricane Katrina, review pp. 164-175 of the article, “After Katrina: Building Back Better Than Ever,” and think about how the recommendations made might be applied to other natural disaster situations and/or locations.
  • Review Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 17 in your course text, Crisis Intervention Strategies, paying particular attention to the information on response efforts to Hurricane Katrina.
  • Review Chapters 9 and 12 in your course text, Crisis Management in the New Strategy Landscape, focusing on how organizational learning can be a useful part of crisis management evaluation and analysis.
  • Review the article, “Project CREST: A New Model for Mental Health Intervention After a Community Disaster.” Consider how response analysis led to the development, in this example, of a useful new disaster intervention training.
  • Review the article, “Styles of Suicide Intervention: Professionals’ Responses and Clients’ Preferences,” and reflect on how the authors investigated and analyzed professional responses to client suicide.
  • Using Hurricane Katrina as your natural disaster case study, think about and evaluate the strategies used in the Mississippi crisis plan.
  • Research the impact of Hurricane Katrina on either the Alabama or Louisiana coast line.
  • Then consider which elements or strategies of the Mississippi crisis plan might be applicable and/or relevant to use in Alabama or Louisiana.
  • Research the demographics for either the Alabama or Louisiana coast line and determine how the Mississippi crisis plan could be used in either of those states.
  • Consider what you think might need to be added to the Mississippi crisis plan were it to be applied to recovery efforts in either Alabama or Louisiana.

The assignment: (46 pages)

  • Based on your evaluation of strategies and the situation in the Hurricane Katrina natural disaster, explain which strategies you would use and why.
  • Based on your analysis of the Mississippi crisis plan, explain which elements of the plan might be relevant/applicable to either Alabama or Louisiana.
  • Identify any element of the plan that might be missing for either Alabama or Louisiana.
