Organizational Climate at Wal-Mart

The secret to Wal-Mart’s success has long been attributed to its strong culture. Wal-Mart employees are referred to as “Walmartians” which is a sign of a unique culture shared by them. This culture is responsible for a company of this magnitude to be able to sustain its entrepreneurial spirit decade after decade.

In early days, Wal-Mart achieved remarkable growth rates and was the first trillion-dollar company in the world. With amazing success came criticism. Wal-Mart once held the record for being sued the maximum number of times. Its practices and culture were held responsible for killing small local retailers. It was also criticized for gender-based discrimination, it’s overtime policies, and using sweatshop products.

Go to Walmart’s Website and review the employment benefits it offers, located at http://walmartstores.com/Careers/7750.aspx.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

  1. Explain how viable employee relations’ practices have contributed to Wal-Mart’s success as an employer.
  2. Speculate on the contribution that employee benefits have in relation to the success of Wal-Mart’s employment practices.
  3. Predict the major effects that the organizational culture and the use of performance criteria could have on the establishment of a union.
  4. Speculate on why you believe Wal-Mart has not been effectively unionized over the years. Provide a rationale for your response.
  5. Use at least five (5) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia does not qualify as an academic resource.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Summarize the differences between employee relations and labor relations.
  • Examine the relationship between management and unions.

I need 3-4 slides answering question 5 ONLY!

This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.

The major responsibilities of human resources management (HRM) are attracting, developing, and maintaining a quality workforce. Research an organization, with which you are familiar, that is in need of a change and present how you will manage the change process by incorporating the three essential duties of HRM. Throughout this assignment, teammates will need to demonstrate skills for effective collaboration, negotiation, and teamwork.

Each CLC group will choose one subsystem to change and create a PowerPoint presentation of 12-15 slides (including title and reference slides) addressing the following questions that pertain to the major human resource management responsibilities and to change management. Strengthen your recommendations by showing how your proposed changes are working in another similar organization that is successful.

Address following in your presentation:

  1. Provide an overview of the organization you have chosen including three subsystems of the organization, three stakeholders of the organization, and the reason for selecting this organization.
  2. What one major organizational subsystem needs to be changed in the organization? Justify your choice. How does it compare to a similar successful organization?
  3. How will the subsystem change affect the two other subsystems within the organization that you have identified and how will you realign the total system?
  4. Identify and explain how you would ensure that the proposed change will satisfy any three stakeholders of the organization?
  5. How should the organization attract, develop, and maintain the workforce required to bring about your proposed change?
    1. Choose at least one of the following in your discussion about attracting a quality workforce to support the change in Questions 2 and 3 above: human resource planning, recruitment, or selection.
    2. Choose at least one of the following in your discussion about developing a quality workforce to support the change in Questions 2 and 3 above: (and this must tie in to 5a too): employee orientation, training and development, or performance appraisal.
    3. Choose at least one of the following in your discussion about maintaining a quality workforce to support the change in Questions 2 and 3 above (and must relate to 5a and 5b): career development, work-life balance, compensation and benefits, employee retention and turnover, or labor-management relations.

Integrate a faith-based or worldview-based component in the presentation and make a clear connection on how it informs the groups’ management practices. (NOTE: Individuals all have a worldview, and that worldview influences their decisions, values, and perceptions. It also affects how they manage people, or think they should be managed. For this assignment, this requirement relates to the worldview of the presenters.)

Students must submit their Peer Evaluations before midnight on the due date of this assignment.

Include at least four academic references to support your position. One of them should directly relate to the company discussed in your presentation and another to the organization to which you are comparing it. These needed to be cited within your presentation not just as references at the end of the presentation.

Include slide notes with your presentation.

The project is aimed at the process of management and its functions in real organizations and the legal, moral, and ethical dilemmas we face as individuals and in our roles as part of the managerial process.  Further, each situation will be fraught with ethical considerations and ramifications. you will search, discuss, analyze, and report information. you will play both roles() . The point is that as managers, clarity of thought influences not only the quality of their life but all those who work for them.  As decision-makers, managers often need to be willing to take a position and try to influence others to make a decision that they try to promote.  To be effective, they should be willing and able to describe their rationale for the choice they made.

After a topic is assigned, you will develop PowerPoint slides to support their position (20 slides max, not including references slides listing your sources). each person may clarify/defend their position.  Furthermore, the instructor may also question if they feel a position lacks merit. Additionally, instructors will look at the quality of your questions and answers to other students and at the end, a student’s rationale for choosing one side of an argument over the other.

The point of this exercise is to help each of you develop clarity of thought. Be advised that instructors may ask pointed questions from each student to determine whether the basis of a position is an opinion or rationally based ideas on these topics.  Just as with other assignments, facts, figures, and expertise, carry a lot more weight when arguing a position that does opinion alone.

Give the instructor and other students facts when arguing positions.  Facts, data, and analysis in addition to insight are all potent tools in any manager’s arsenal.  Finally, please note that some positions will be easier to argue than others when grading, instructors will take that into consideration as well.  So even if it seems the other side has an easier position to defend, instructors will compensate for that issue.
