Hello Class!

A standard of care is described as the guideline for the appropriate status of care and treatment that should be established within the line of work. Standards of care are developed through the many laws and regulations that are in place, expecting organizations and individuals to perform up to the standards. Organizations can also tighten the standard even more, but it must not deviate out of the baseline standard. For example, state and local areas can establish a more customized standard of care.

These standards protect patients within the care they are receiving. It also ensures that medical practices, treatments, and diagnoses will be delivered in good quality. 

I personally feel as if standards are important. Without a standard, anything is accepted- which simply does not work in the health care industry. This is a way to maintain delivery of quality medical care, acting as a baseline, and it is pretty standardized anywhere in our nation. Some states even go a little further to increase their standard of care to make the care being delivered even better. Which is why there are some good medical facilities, and there are some great ones, and there are those that fail to meet the standard and end up in a mess of malpractice.

As described in Chapter 3 in the Public Value Scorecard text, the Department of Revenue in Minnesota implemented an invest/divest strategy in an attempt to change the oversight process. The purpose of this strategy was an attempt to critically examine the Department and its mission while directing internal resources to the highest priorities before requesting additional funding. In your initial post:

  • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Department.
  • Identify the outcomes which the Department and Division wanted to see accomplished and outcomes measured.
  • List the pros and cons of implementing this strategy.
  • How effective was this strategy? What risks were associated with implementing it?

Briefing Memo

Various officials have a social media presence and appear on local radio or host a local podcast. For this assignment, you will prepare a briefing memo with talking points that are focused on a risk management or hazard mitigation message about your community. The audience you are preparing your briefing material for consists of elected officials who do not have subject matter expertise. 

Include the elements listed below in your briefing memo. 

  • Include the risk or hazard to the community, and provide three bullets addressing the primary message that you want to share about the hazard or risk. 
  • Provide a brief critique of the risk or hazard communication tools and existing strategies that are being used in your community. 
  • Identify the action that the message receiver should take to reduce the risk. 
  • Include two samples of what officials would say in a Twitter or social media post. 
  • Provide two questions and answers. 
  • Include contact information on how the receivers can gain more information or actively participate. 
  • Provide notes on lessons learned or best practices. For instance, you might provide a warning about being truthful in front of the media, you might share an instance where being truthful in the media went wrong, or you might show the potential repercussions that being untruthful can have on the information system.
