Week Discussion 5

Discussion Questions

Before beginning work on this discussion forum, please review the link “Doing Discussion Questions Right” and any specific instructions for this topic.

Before the end of the week, begin commenting on at least two of your classmates’ responses. You can ask technical questions or respond generally to the overall experience. Be objective, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language, even in criticism, to work toward the goal of positive progress. Submit your responses in the Discussion Area.

Introduction

By the due date assigned, respond to the assigned discussion questions and submit your responses to the appropriate topic in this Discussion Area. Respond to the assigned questions using the lessons and vocabulary found in the reading.

Select any one of the following starter bullet point sections. Review the important themes within the sub-questions of each bullet point. The sub-questions are designed to get you thinking about some of the important issues. Your response should provide a succinct synthesis of the key themes in a way that articulates a clear point, position, or conclusion supported by research. Select a different bullet point section than what your peers have already posted so that we can engage in several discussions on relevant topics. If all of the bullet points have been addressed, then you may begin to reuse the bullet points with the expectation that varied responses continue.

The Research Method Rationale

Look ahead to the Dissertation Research Prospectus that you will be expected to prepare in RES861 to describe the key elements of your desired doctoral research. Consider the instructions for drafting the Research Method Rationale section of the Prospectus and if you have begun this section in a prior course, refine it or write a first draft of a research method choice for your dissertation study for this assignment.

By Unit 6, you may already have a strong sense of whether you will choose a qualitative or quantitative method for your dissertation research, so feel free to draft the rationale for your actual method choice at this point in time. Choose the research method that you see best aligns with your research focus, and justify your decision using appropriate scholarly research guides that you have sourced throughout this course and your other research methods courses.

The rationale should be at least 3 paragraphs in length and well cited with appropriate scholarly research guides or specific scholarly research you have sourced as a specific research method and research design choice you are considering for your dissertation research study.

It can be helpful to draft this section directly within the Dissertation Research Prospectus Template knowing you will carry this document forward to develop in RES861, so please do so for this assignment submission.

Management Team Briefing on Employment Laws

In your new role  as Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for a major retail organization,  you have been tasked within the first 30 days by the CEO to conduct a  presentation to the management team on employment law awareness. The CEO  informed you that under the previous CHRO the company experienced lack  of employment law understanding, resulting in a few lawsuits that were  not in the company’s favor. Avoiding similar experiences is a high  priority and your thorough presentation to the management team is the  first big step to success.

Prepare a fifteen to twenty (15-20) slide PowerPoint presentation in which you:

  1. Include cover, agenda, conclusion, and reference list slides, all of which may count toward total slide count.
  2. Provide a 1-2 slide overview of employment law based on information found in Chapter 1 of Employment Law for Human Resource Practice.  NOTE: You may use your discretion to decide what information needs to  be addressed as long as your overview is descriptive and relevant.
  3. Include in the remaining slides the following required presentation information:
    • Provide a  three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points  highlighting a discussion on whom employees and employers are in  determining employment relationships
    • Provide a  three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points  highlighting a discussion on the concept of employment discrimination
    • Provide a  three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points  highlighting a discussion on the types of discrimination
    • Provide a three (3) slide minimum covering at least 6 strong bullet points highlighting a discussion on retaliation
  4. Go to https://research.strayer.edu to locate at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: You may only use the resources listed in the course syllabus and those that are specifically provided by the instructor.

Important Notes:  (1) Total number of words in the bullet points are not more important  than the quality of the information. (2) More detailed information  should be included in the footnotes of the presentation. (3)  Presentations must have a business-like professional look.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Text font  size for headings and titles in the presentation must not exceed 36 pt.  For all other text, the font ideally should not exceed 24 pt. Check with  your professor for additional details.
  • Presentation text must be properly aligned throughout the presentation and maintain the same line spacing and font size.
  • Professional presentation templates will be used. Check with the professor on possible examples.
  • If images  found at websites or other sources are placed in the presentation,  credit must be given to the sources with citations and references

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Assess and understand employment laws, the rights they confer on employees, and the processes involved in enforcing these laws.
  • Examine the legal significance of determining whether an employment relationship exists.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in employment law.
  • Write clearly and concisely about employment law using proper writing mechanics.

Labor Unions

Summarize your understanding of union membership today in the US. What is the current status of union membership? Share some statistics and trends. Did you ever belong to a labor union? If you did, do you think union membership benefited you? If you did not, do you think a union would have benefited you? Why or why not?

Use the articles and resources provided to support your ideas.

Reference.

Chapter 11: Working with Labor UnionsMost HRM professionals will work with unions. The unionization process, how to negotiate union contracts, and history of labor unions are discussed.

Chapter 12: Safety and Health at WorkEmployee safety and health are necessary to a productive workplace. This chapter addresses some of the health and safety issues, such as drug use, carpal tunnel, and other issues relating to keeping employees healthy at work.

Do you favor EFCA or the current secret ballot system? Please justify your response.
