Activity 5: Team Essay

Identify a team in which you have had many opportunities to participate, observe, and interact. This team does not necessarily need to be from industry; however, please review the concepts below that you will be required to discuss prior to selecting the team you wish to cover. The list of concepts may help you select or eliminate certain teams. The team you choose should have been in existence over a reasonable period in order for you to discuss team development and to have specific examples to support your conclusions.

If you have never personally participated in a team suited for this activity, you may select a team in which you were not a member and interview two (2) or more team members. In your interviews, you should focus on each of the concepts below that will then be developed into an essay. You should not simply ask, “What type of team is this?” because many people are not familiar with the terms you have learned in this course. Rather, you should ask more general questions such as, “Are each of the team members in the same department, or are they in different departments? Are all members in one location? Do team members meet in person, or is their communication only via e-mail, voicemail, or teleconferencing?” 

After identifying a team, write an essay describing that team with the concepts presented in the text. The objective of your essay is to demonstrate that you understand the concepts and that you can apply them to a real-world situation; therefore, you should discuss/explain each of the following five (5) concepts and then relate your team to each concept using examples. Provide two (2) or three (3) examples for each concept.

1. Type of Team: functional team, cross-functional team, self-managed team, virtual team, or global team 

2. Team members’ characteristics, including expertise and functional experience

3. Team culture and how it affects their ability to implement employee participation 

4. Team challenges: developing groupthink, presence of free-riders, negativity, and lack of trust

5. Team leadership and how it affects employee participation

Your Activity responses should be both grammatically and mechanically correct, and formatted in the same fashion as the Activity itself. If there is a Part A, your response should identify a Part A, etc. In addition, you must appropriately cite all resources used in your response and document in a bibliography using APA style. The journal entry assignment is a reflective essay writing assignment. You will post, to your journal, a reflective writing essay describing your current understanding of your personal stance on ethics in healthcare. The Instructor will post one response to your journal entry, and this begins the journaling that will continue throughout the course. This initial essay is important because it will begin the processing of information and deep insight you will need on this topic as you work toward your final project in the course (due Wednesday of Week 4). The final project requires you to develop a personal ethics statement based on legal and ethical criteria in healthcare.

Journal Entry for Week 1 is a reflective essay describing your personal stance on ethics in healthcare. Review the theorists by reading Chapter 1 “Practical Theory” in the text and then develop your own definition of ethics. Answer the question, “How do you define ethics in a personal and professional sense?”

Compensation Strategies, Best Practices, and Challenges Presentation

For this assignment, assume you are a compensation analyst in a large financial services company. You have been in your role for almost a year. At your weekly one-on-one with your boss, she tells you that the human resources representatives at the company are fielding a number of questions from employees and applicants about compensation. The human resource representatives’ knowledge of compensation is not deep.

She asks that you prepare and deliver a 10- to 15-minute PowerPoint presentation (10–15 slides) at an upcoming departmental meeting that provides basic information about what is going on in the compensation field today. Specifically she wants you to address compensation strategies that companies employ, note three of their best compensation practices, and examine three compensation challenges today’s companies are facing.

 Assume that the reader of the paper is a business owner or senior level manager. Your paper should present a clear analytical review of the human resource topic you have chosen. Your paper should include: 

a. An introduction and conclusion 

b. A clear description of the issue or topic. Explain why the topic is a something worth investigating (you can reference your popular press article here). Present a review of the issue/topic and inform the reader of how it came to be. Describe how the issue/topic matters. Why is it an issue or concern? 

c. Compare and contrast the issue using specific information or details (with appropriate sources) from both the manager side and the employee side of the issue. Why would this issue/concern matter to a business? To an employee? What impact would this issue have on the business or on the employee?

 d. What action should manager or owners take in regard to this issue/topic to resolve the issue? Use sources throughout this section to justify your thoughts. THIS SECTION SHOULD BE DETAILED and should reference Human Resource centered strategies to address the issue/topic. 

The purpose of this paper is for you to identify a current issue or topic in Human Resources that a business in your field or discipline would face. Students are expected to research to learn how to stay current on HR related topics as it is a critical need for a manager, as is the knowledge of how to strategically plan for the Human Resources function. 

The paper requires you to develop a clear analysis based on current research of a topic or issue in Human Resources. You want to conduct a scholarly review of the literature, and you must have a minimum of four citations from scholarly sources (see the attached list of sample scholarly sources). Your reference page will include at least 6 total references (4 scholarly sources, the class textbook, the popular press article). Keep in mind that this paper is an analysis of the topic/issue and is not merely a summary of the bibliographic list of resources. Your paper must use scholarly references and it must be written in a narrative format synthesizing the research from your citations, which must be in presented in APA format (this means you need both in text citations and a reference page). The paper should be NO LONGER than 5 pages and include at the least the following: 

1. Introduction and Purpose of the Paper 

2. General Findings of the Research (including definition of the issue) 

3. Business Recommendation (with evidence that the solution recommended is a good one) 

4. Conclusions 

5. Reference Page (this is NOT included in the 5 page limit)
