Leadership skills

Research suggests that being a good public speaker can help individuals grow their business, advance their careers, and form strong collaborations (Tsaousides 2017). However, communicating your ideas clearly and presenting them in public can prove to be a challenge. For this forum, discuss what researchers believe are the top reasons for public speaking anxiety or fear. Determine if any of these reasons are applicable to you and what would be the best remedy to overcome these fears.

Stereotype Threat Definition

Steele (2010) reports that stereotype threat affects many types of identity groups across multiple performance areas:

The effect has been observed in women, African Americans, white males, Latino Americans, third-grade American school girls, Asian-American students, European males aspiring to be clinical psychologists (under the threat of negative stereotypes about men’s ability to understand feelings), French college students, German grade school girls, U.S. soldiers on army bases in Italy, women business school students, white and black athletes, older Americans, and so on. It has been shown to affect many performances: math, verbal, analytic, and IQ test performance, golf putting, reaction time performance, language usage aggressiveness in negotiations, memory performance, the height of athletic jumping, and so on (pp. 97–98).

Define stereotype threat. Use the Steele (2010) text and summarize one group’s experience with stereotype threat. (For example, African-Americans, whites, Asians, women, older persons, or lower socioeconomic class.)

Discussion – Week 1

The Logic of Inference: The Science of Uncertainty

Describing and explaining social phenomena is a complex task. Box’s quote speaks to the point that it is a near impossible undertaking to fully explain such systems—physical or social—using a set of models. Yet even though these models contain some error, the models nevertheless assist with illuminating how the world works and advancing social change.

The competent quantitative researcher understands the balance between making statements related to theoretical understanding of relationships and recognizing that our social systems are of such complexity that we will always have some error. The key, for the rigorous researcher, is recognizing and mitigating the error as much as possible.

As a graduate student and consumer of research, you must recognize the error that might be present within your research and the research of others.

Post a very brief description (1–3 sentences) of the article you found and address the following:

  1. Describe how you think the research in the article is useful (e.g., what population is it helping? What problem is it solving?).
  2. Using Y=f(X) +E notation, identify the independent and dependent variables.
  3. How might the research models presented be wrong? What types of error might be present in the reported research?

Be sure to support your Main Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.
