Clear expectations establish accountabilities

Properly formatted job descriptions provide a specific outline of the job requirements; however, there are times that there are assumed expectations built into the description that are not clearly communicated. Think about a time when you were evaluated on an action, task, or behavior and were not clearly provided the directions or expectations prior to the evaluation.

In your initial post, briefly describe the situation and any ramifications that resulted from not being given clear directions. What actions should the human resource manager have taken to provide clear communication so that there is no misunderstanding of the expectations prior to the evaluation?

Question 1

Arrow Furniture is a family-owned and operated manufacturer of high-end furniture located in North Carolina. The furniture industry has suffered from foreign competition over recent years. Nationwide, there have been massive layoffs and several large companies have closed. Arrow’s workers are feeling these pressures and have begun displaying counterproductive behaviors. The HR manager recently told Mary Baker, the family member serving as CEO, that employees are threatening to unionize if they don’t get higher pay and more job security. Mary is upset by this comment because the family has supported employees with decent salaries and health benefits. Higher wages are the last thing the company needs if they are to remain competitive.

The Baker family wants to turn things around. They know they will have to be more competitive price-wise. This might be achieved by finding cheaper suppliers, lowering employee labor costs, or increasing productivity. That said, the Baker’s strongly believe that it is important to “take care of their people,” many of whom are lifelong employees.

A global car manufacturer is going to open a new facility in the community. It is likely the company will offer higher salaries and better benefits than offered by Arrow Furniture. The firm is known to offer such benefits in an attempt to reduce the need for a union. Jobs at this plant will be more technically advanced than those at Arrow and the company is offering job training to those who are interested.

The Bakers are aware that the nature of work at Arrow results in moderate levels of hygiene factors and low motivators.

Using the 3-Step Problem-Solving Approach and the Organizing Framework, what should the Bakers do to motivate their employees and get support for the company’s future plans?

Discussion – Week 10- 8130

Presenting Your Marketing Product

A marketing plan sets the stage for how you will introduce a new or existing health program, initiative, or health care service offered by your agency or organization. However, how do you actually “market” the proposed program, initiative, or service?

Not surprisingly, advertising is a form of marketing for various products and services. In order to advertise effectively, certain marketing products, such as brochures, posters, or television commercials, are used to communicate to target audiences. Like most businesses and organizations, the health care industry also relies on the marketing of certain health programs or health care services to remain competitive in the delivery of effective health care. What types of marketing products do you anticipate seeing in the practice of health care administration?

For this Discussion, post your marketing product to the Discussion board for this week. Then, review the resources for this week and reflect on the process of developing a marketing product. Consider how the marketing product developed by your colleagues may relate to the marketing plan for their health care agency or organization.

By Day 3

Post your marketing product, along with a brief explanation. Be sure to provide a brief background of your marketing product, including the rationale, purpose, and the component of your marketing plan that your marketing product represents.

3.1.1.General Environmental (PESTEL) Analysis (2-4 pages): This section needs to include a
complete analysis of the general external environment. Please refer to figure 3.1 and Table 3.1 on pages 38-39 of your textbook (5th Ed.). You should explicitly analyze how any trend you identify in each of the segments in the external environment may affect the industry. You need to explicitly state the implications. For example, if the industry you are analyzing is personal computers and you see an expanding economy in some emerging economies, but a recession and declining disposable incomes in other economies, your analysis should include how these trends are likely to influence the personal computer industry. Do not discuss specific companies in this section. At the end of this section, you need to identify the industry top two driving forces (DFs). A driving force is an external environment change (e.g. change in a governmental policy or emergence of a new breakthrough technology) which may significantly change the rule of the game in the industry competition. Please refer to Table 3.2 and pages 52-54 of your textbook (5th Ed.).

BUSI530 Week 7 Discussion 11

The ADAAA expanded the definition of “disability” under the ADA to state that an impairment can be “substantially limiting” even if it expected to last only a limited period of time.

  • Does this mean that pregnancy-related conditions that      are “substantially limiting” can serve as the basis for either a gender      discrimination or disability discrimination claim, or even both?
  • If so, what would be the advantage of filing a      disability discrimination claim as opposed to a gender discrimination      claim?

Job Offer Negotiations

you are the applicant in this case

The Applicant

You are considering a job offer from a highly respected consulting firm and have requested a meeting with the person who would become your future boss, a partner at the firm, to negotiate the terms of the offer. The proceedings have come to a point at which you must make a decision to accept or reject the offer during this meeting or at the end of the day at the latest. You are quickly approaching the conclusion of your MBA degree and would like to make a decision as to where you will be working afterwards.

The Recruiter

You are a partner at a multinational consulting firm. During the recent financial crisis, the demand for strategy consulting services decreased significantly and a hiring freeze swept your firm, paired with isolated lay-offs. However, the past three years have been favorable to the industry. Your firm has performed particularly well during this period, and the resulting promotions and firm retention has left your firm in need of human capital. You are looking to hire another consultant to alleviate some of the overwhelming workload.

A student assigned as “the Applicant” and a student assigned as “the Recruiter” shall negotiate an employment contract within the parameters defined in the respective case studies.  The areas that need to be negotiated are: Base Salary, Signing Bonus, Performance Bonus, Pension, Health Coverage, Paid Vacation, Moving Expenses and Start Date.

In order to complete this project, students will need to purchase the case at Harvard Business Publishing by following this link:   https://hbsp.harvard.edu/import/743068

Students must present a one-page paper that lists the negotiated terms.  Additionally, each student must submit a paper, describing each of the following:

  1. What were the easiest terms to negotiate?  Why do you believe they were easier to negotiate, and did it surprise you that these terms would be among the easiest terms?
  2. What were the hardest terms to negotiate?  Why do you believe they were harder to negotiate, and did it surprise you that these terms would be among the hardest terms?
  3. Describe the negotiation process that took place.  For example, but not limited to, how many sessions, how long were the sessions, how did the parties separate the topics to be negotiated.
  4. What strengths and weaknesses did you observe about yourself in the negotiating process.

Essay

 1. You are a senior director of HR who is directly in charge of issues related to diversity and inclusion within a medium-sized U.S.-based organization. It has come to your attention that there may be some problems surrounding diversity within one of the two major locations, its Philadelphia and Phoenix offices, that the organization operates from. Via an online survey distributed to employees working in both locations, the HR department has gathered ratings of employees’ perceptions of each location’s climate for diversity, defined as the extent to which an organization advocates fair human resource policies and socially integrates underrepresented employees. There are five questions that comprise the diversity climate measure, each of which was rated on a 1 to 7 scale. There were 75 employees who participated from the Philadelphia location and 72 from the Phoenix location.

a. How would you go about analyzing the data to determine whether one location or another seemed to have issues surrounding diversity that might require further investigation and possible intervention?

b. If there were three locations, how would this change your strategic approach to analyzing the data?
