Refining the Theoretical Foundation for Research

Refining the Theoretical Foundation for Research

Cassandra felt a huge sense of relief as she saw all of the elements of her theoretical foundation come together. She had invested a lot of time and energy into understanding her selected phenomenon and she was confident that she was on her way to developing a strong program of research. She was happy to set aside the work and enjoy some much-needed rest. When she looked at the partial draft of her paper again a few days later, she was surprised to notice a significant inconsistency in how she defined one of the concepts. With fresh eyes, she was able to discover something she had been overlooking for weeks! Now, it seemed like she would need to start at the beginning again to clarify the meaning of this concept.
Since Eduardo first began developing his theoretical foundation for research, a small, quiet voice had been nagging for his attention. He thought that he would understand certain aspects of his phenomenon better by now, and it bothered him that parts of his foundation still did not seem to work together. On the one hand, he reassured himself that his theoretical foundation was probably good enough for now and his confusion was due to his inexperience with the whole research process. On the other hand, he wondered if his doubts could mean that his theoretical foundation was missing something critical. He wasn’t sure what to do.
As Taylor thought more deeply about her theoretical foundation, she wondered if she was using the right symbols to convey the information as she intended. She had already revised her graphic model a number of times, and she still wasn’t sure if it made sense. Finally, she realized that she really needed others’ input, because even if it did seem logical to her, it might not be clear to others who were less familiar with her phenomenon of interest.

What questions or concerns have you encountered while developing your theoretical foundation for research? What kind of feedback would you like to receive from your colleagues as you refine your work?

In this Discussion, you have the opportunity to share your dilemmas and request support to help you hone your theoretical foundation for research. In addition, you can offer ideas and encouragement to your colleagues.

By Day 3

Post questions and/or describe the difficulties you have encountered while developing your theoretical foundation for research. Ask for feedback or support from your colleagues to help you to refine your work.

Strategies for Academic Portfolios

In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.

Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on strategies that you can pursue in developing portfolios or portfolio elements that focus on academic achievements.
  • Review one or more samples from your own research of resources focused on portfolio development.

Post 6-8 paragraph an explanation of at least two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into your professional development goals. Then, explain how those goals may align with the University’s emphasis on social change. Be specific and provide examples.

Introduction: Communication Change Challenge (CCC) Part 7

In Part 7, you will finally try out your new communication behaviors in both planned and unplanned situations.

Part 7 requires up to a 2-week window of time to complete because it requires you to implement your new behaviors and to observe, record, and analyze the impact. As a result, this part was assigned during Week 6, so you need to use all conversations from Week 6 and Week 7.

For Part 7 of the project, you will do the following:

plan a minimum of 3 situations in which you will implement your new communication behavior over a time span of 2 weeks (during Weeks 6 and 7).

Maintain a dated journal narrative to describe what happened in both planned and unplanned circumstances, including your thoughts on how well you performed the behavior.

Instructions

Include the following items in Part 7 of your report:

7A. Planning

Create a list of at least 3 specific planned situations in which you will implement your new behaviors over a time span of 2 weeks, from Week 6 and Week 7. Note: You should also implement your new behaviors in any unplanned situations when you have the opportunity to do so.

7A1. 1st planned conversation

7A2. 2nd planned conversation

7A3. 3rd planned conversation

7B. Evaluation of Planned Conversations

Evaluate your performance each time you attempt your new behavior in new planned situations. As you proceed with this phase of the project, be prepared for potential problems.

You may reach periodic plateaus in which you are not changing as dramatically as you would like.

You may discover that your goal statement is not accurate and that you were trying to increase the wrong behaviors.

You may also find that by merely monitoring the frequency of your goal behavior, your problem disappears.

In any case, remain flexible and keep working. If necessary, revise your goal statement, change your target behavior, and promise yourself a reward for reaching some goal. The goal is communication behavior change, and there are many avenues for achieving and maintaining that change.

Write a dated narrative journal evaluation that describes in detail what occurred upon implementation of your new communication behaviors in planned circumstances. Address the 3 or more planned opportunities as you described them in 7A. Be sure to address the following questions in your evaluation for each conversation:

7B1. What seemed to work for you?

7B2. What did not seem to work?

7B3. In what situations were you most successful?

7B4. What behaviors would you like to perform again?

7B5. What will you do differently the next time?

7C. Evaluation of Unplanned Conversations

Evaluate your performance each time you attempt your new behavior in new unplanned situations. Write a dated narrative journal evaluation that describes in detail what occurred upon implementation of your new communication behaviors in unplanned circumstances. Aim to explain 2 or 3 unplanned conversations. Be sure to address the following questions in your evaluation for each conversation:

7C1. What seemed to work for you?

7C2. What did not seem to work?

7C3. In what situations were you most successful?

7C4. What behaviors would you like to perform again?

7C5. What will you do differently the next time?
