Question 1

Arrow Furniture is a family-owned and operated manufacturer of high-end furniture located in North Carolina. The furniture industry has suffered from foreign competition over recent years. Nationwide, there have been massive layoffs and several large companies have closed. Arrow’s workers are feeling these pressures and have begun displaying counterproductive behaviors. The HR manager recently told Mary Baker, the family member serving as CEO, that employees are threatening to unionize if they don’t get higher pay and more job security. Mary is upset by this comment because the family has supported employees with decent salaries and health benefits. Higher wages are the last thing the company needs if they are to remain competitive.

The Baker family wants to turn things around. They know they will have to be more competitive price-wise. This might be achieved by finding cheaper suppliers, lowering employee labor costs, or increasing productivity. That said, the Baker’s strongly believe that it is important to “take care of their people,” many of whom are lifelong employees.

A global car manufacturer is going to open a new facility in the community. It is likely the company will offer higher salaries and better benefits than offered by Arrow Furniture. The firm is known to offer such benefits in an attempt to reduce the need for a union. Jobs at this plant will be more technically advanced than those at Arrow and the company is offering job training to those who are interested.

The Bakers are aware that the nature of work at Arrow results in moderate levels of hygiene factors and low motivators.

Using the 3-Step Problem-Solving Approach and the Organizing Framework, what should the Bakers do to motivate their employees and get support for the company’s future plans?

Question 2

Review the following conversation:

Marcy:  Dana, can I talk to you for a couple of minutes? We’ve been roommates for two years and I think I have a time management problem. I just don’t get enough done in a day. What do you think?

Dana:  Tell me more. How did you decide that you have a problem?

Marcy:  I never get everything done on my to-do list. The more I get done, the more I end up adding to the list.

Dana:  What would solving the problem look like to you?

Marcy:  Well, I’d get everything done on my list.

Dana:  Is that realistic?

Marcy:  It’s not, but what else am I going to do?

Dana:  What else can you do that will help? Can you work with an advisor? Use a scheduling program?

This is an example of coaching. Describe the process of coaching and explain why is it important for managers to be effective coaches.

Thought Paper 2

Thought Paper

There are three goals of the Thought Paper assignment enabled in two written parts (Part A and Part B).

Goal One

The first goal is to enable you to think over pressing issues in employee compensation and benefits to help you determine your position on the issue. A sample issue: Should companies abandon the use of compensation surveys?

In your paper, you will take a position on the issue (e.g., I believe that companies should not abandon the use of compensation surveys because…), and provide a rationale for your position, calling on outside sources to help substantiate it. Your position stated before the word because is Part A of the written paper.

Goal Two

The second goal is to find your voice as an aspiring professional. Your opinion should be informed by an analysis of credible sources and experiences to earn respect in your profession, and your opinion and analysis is the information that follows the word because in Part A. This section is Part B of the written paper

Goal Three

The third goal is to provide an opportunity for you to express information clearly and concisely in written form. This is a general goal.

Your Role

In preparing this assignment, assume the role of a compensation professional who is briefing HR colleagues on a timely employee compensation topic. In the example, you would provide a rationale for each point that you raise after the word because

Base your paper on two or three articles from HR-practitioner publications (e.g., HRMagazine, published by the Society for Human Resource Management), business periodicals (e.g., Forbes), major newspapers (e.g., New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal), or other news outlets (e.g., cnn.com). Please cite your sources in the text using a consistent style and list each source as a reference on the last page of your assignment. There should be sufficient information to enable me to obtain the item (that is, author name, source such as a website, year if it is a book or journal, and the pages numbers if it is a book or journal). And formulate a rationale for your position based on your chosen sources and professional experience.

Assignment Grading

You will receive credit for this assignment (20 to 30 points based on the quality of your answer) if you satisfy Parts A and B. Stating your position (Part A) without providing any coherent rationale based on your thoughts and outside sources (Part B) earns you 3 points—10% of the total points. Stating your position (Part A) and providing a rationale that does not include your own thoughts or information from relevant sources to substantiate it (Part B) earns you 15 points—50% of the total points.  Please spell- and grammar check your work. Having more than two errors will lead to a reduction of 1 point per error (that is, 1 point for the 3rd error, 1 point for the 4th error, and so forth).

question-

Discuss the adverse impact of stereotyping in the workplace. Give detailed examples of various HR functions where stereotyping may occur. Examine the consequences of stereotyping as they relate to an employer’s exposure to liability.

students response

Stereotyping is seen in the workplace daily. An example of this in the workplace would be with performance review and promotional opportunities. The textbook gives a great example of sexual stereotyping, where a man and woman are held to different standards during a performance review. The woman ends up getting a negative performance review based on her “charm” and “un-lady like appearance and personality” (Page 195). She was also passed up for a promotion based on this. Despite the fact that the employer was able to pinpoint additional reasons she was passed up for the promotion, the judge voted in her favor because some of the reasons that she was denied a promotion attributed to her un-lady like appearance/behavior. The consequences of this not only include lawsuits such as this one, but also depriving the company of someone more deserving and qualified. Basing a promotion on someone’s appearance is a disservice to the employee and company as a whole. It also leads to low morale, a lack of confidence in upper management’s decision making, and distrust of the organization.

Another example could be found in an employment situation. A hiring committee could look differently on a pregnant applicant vs. a single professional. The hiring committee could make an assumption that the pregnant applicant would be distracted by her duties as a parent to focus on work and hire the single applicant based on availability and perceived dedication. This could also be a missed opportunity for the company to hire a more qualified candidate. As well, this would be seen as a discriminatory act which could lead to lawsuits based on the final tally and committee remarks.
