Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining

Read Case Study 6-2, “Classification of a Bargaining Subject,” on page 285 in your textbook, and answer the questions provided.

Questions

  1. What is a mandatory subject of bargaining?
  2. Can a union waive its right to bargain over a mandatory subject of bargaining?
  3. Would the established labor agreement apply to this case study?
  4. Was management’s refusal to bargain over the subject of surveillance camera usage in the workplace a violation of the duty to bargain in good faith under the Labor Management Relations Act (LMRA) as amended? If so, what should be the appropriate remedy?
  5. Discuss the merits of the parties’ respective positions in this case.

Your response to these questions should be a minimum of 2 pages in length. Use APA format to cite and reference all quoted and paraphrased material, including your textbook. Please be sure to include your reference list on a separate page.

Discussion

There will be times when a social worker is presented with a case where they are not familiar with the surrounding psychosocial issues. Because social workers are on a continual journey in learning, it is important to read pertinent literature. This Discussion provides an opportunity to visit Walden Library and strengthen your skills in identifying and locating an empirical research article.

To prepare:

  • Select one of these three groups: (1) an immigrant individual from a racial or ethnic minority group, (2) a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) individual, OR (3) an individual who is physically disabled.
  • Review the Walden Library resources listed in the Learning Resources.
  • Then conduct a library search for an empirical study focused on one of the groups above and the unique psychosocial factors or issues a social worker should be aware of when working with that group.

Post:

  • Post the APA-style reference for the article you found in the library.
  • Describe four specific psychosocial factors that should be taken into account in order to understand the psychosocial context when working with the group you selected. (Two of these factors should be psychologically related and two of these factors should be socially related).
  • Identify and explain a psychosocial intervention that addresses one of the four specific psychosocial factors you described above.
  • Identify 1 to 2 outcomes you might measure if you were to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.
  • Evaluate one advantage of using a psychosocial framework in social work practice with the group you chose.

Discussion 1 and 2

Discussion 1: What if you could save five lives in a way that results in the death of a single person? If the overall consequences were the same, would it matter if you were intentionally harming that person or not? This problem is raised by the philosopher Philippa Foot (2002c) in her famous “trolley problem.”

Discussion 2:  One way to conceptualize utilitarianism is to hold that the morally required thing to do is to increase the intrinsic good in the world. Trigg is doing just that. But is he going far enough?

If one is morally obligated to maximize the good in the world when should he stop? Should Trigg and the rest of us give all of our income to save the poor – right up to the point of being poor ourselves?

Engagement Leads to Performance

Employee’s attitudes, experiences, feelings, and opinions about the workplace influence how they perform. All leaders in the organization need insight into how engagement influences individual performance. Leaders, supervisors, and HR staff need all of this information to alter and improve current programs and to address individual issues like Karla’s failure to recognize her staff. With 15 employees it’s unlikely that not one employee in her office is worthy of recognition at the end of the year.

How can we work with Karla to support her as she evaluates her staff for performance or recognition?

Working with couples and families presents numerous theoretical, ethical, and practical challenges that are not present when working with individuals. It is important for the helping professional to recognize the differences between working with couples and families as opposed to working with individuals.

By Day 4

Post three examples of how working with couples and families differs from working with individuals. Explain these differences. Then, explain any challenges you may face related to this distinction in your professional practice based on your current skills. Provide an example scenario that illustrates your post.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the resources.

Discussion

Sigmund Freud is often hailed as the father of psychoanalytical theory. His theory was the first to point to the influence of early childhood experiences. However, psychoanalytical theory has received a lot of criticism. Although theories are supposed to be objective and value-free, they are developed within a sociocultural and political context. For example, with historical perspective, it is possible to see that values within the Western Victorian era influenced Freud as he developed his theory. Another criticism is that many psychoanalytical concepts cannot be measured. For example, how do you measure the id, ego, and superego or the notion of unconscious conflicts? As a result, it is difficult to test the accuracy of these concepts using social science research methods.

It is important to critically evaluate theories for their practical use. For example, is it appropriate to use a theory when working with diverse populations or with populations different from those with whom the theory was normed (e.g., women, racial and ethnic minority groups, those who are economically disadvantaged)? Finally, are the assumptions of theories consistent with the values underlying the field? In this Discussion, you respond to some of these concerns.

To prepare, read the following from the Learning Resources:

  • Auld, F., Hyman, M., & Rudzinski, D. (2005). How is therapy with women different? In Resolution and inner conflict: An introduction to psychoanalytic therapy (pp. 217–236). Washington DC: American Psychological Association.
  • National Association of Social Workers. (2008). Code of ethics of the National Association of Social Workers. Retrieved from https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English

Post:

  • Summarize the assumptions of Freud’s psychoanalytical theory in 2 to 3 sentences.
  • Explain whether you believe it is appropriate to apply psychoanalytic theory to women and individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups.
  • Explain whether you believe psychoanalytic theory is consistent with social work values and social work ethics.

HRM 517 WEEK 2 DISCUSSION

Strategic Planning and Organizational Restructuring Attachment

Imagine  you are the HR director of a growing international staffing  organization that services both North America and South America. The CEO  has come to grips with the fact that the HR group, which is currently  decentralized, is in need of restructuring to account for the expected  increase in revenues. The CEO has asked for your opinion on how to best  restructure the firm. Based upon your knowledge, recommend an  organizational structure (e.g., functional, matrix, or projectized)  that will provide growth for the firm. Also, assess the influence that  this project will have on the customers (who are located throughout the  Americas) that are serviced by the HR group.

HR downsizing

Case Assignment

For each Case question below, select three articles (published within the past five years), each from different peer-reviewed academic journals/magazines. [Utilize peer-reviewed academic journal/magazine publications you find through the Trident Online Library.] Find articles that specifically address the following questions regarding the impact of downsizing on the organization and its employees:

  1. Why do firms downsize?
  2. What are the consequences to a community when a firm downsizes?
  3. Evaluate one example of an employer where downsizing was necessary and what its impact was on employees and business.

In your 5-page submission (not counting the cover page), briefly address the three questions about downsizing, then (in the same document) create a bibliography of the nine peer-reviewed academic journal articles that includes a properly formatted reference followed by not less than a half-page paragraph describing the article in your own words, repeating the process until all nine references are inserted and discussed.

Questions to address in your paragraphs include:

  1. The main concept of this article is….
  2. The article is important and adds to the current research literature on the concept because…
  3. The article is valid for research on this topic because…
  4. An area that will continue to add to the researchers’ work is…
  5.  I found the ______________ section of this article to be extremely interesting and would recommend this article to others researching in the HR/OB disciplines.

No reference page is needed for this assignment because the references are a part of the Bibliography. Please read the Grading Rubric for Information Literacy before submitting your paper. Submit the assignment by inserting it into the appropriate drop box by the due date and time.
