week 1 Part 1a

Have you or someone you have known ever been in a situation where there was a major disaster declaration? If not, imagine that you were involved in one. Give an example of a federal grant program made available in that situation and how it assisted with the recovery process. Do you feel the resources were timely and adequate? Why, or why not?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Planning Your Project Attachment

A potential client wants you to be the project manager for a project  that involves moving to a new computerized human resource management  system that supports the firm’s staffing, compensation, employee  relations, and benefit functions. The client is very vague about what  needs to be done, and all they know is that they do not like the current  system. Identify the types of questions you could ask the client to  gain a better understanding of the scope of the project. Other than  having the client answer your questions, what other activities could you  engage in to gain a better understanding?

The Fig Technologies Executive Leadership Council (ELC) has received several requests for transfer to the United States from nations of diminished tolerance. The ELC has asked you to develop a presentation briefly explaining the history of diversity-based legislation. In your presentation, describe the challenges of legislating diversity, and compare historical legislation of diverse populations to more recent diversity legislation. Also, explain how diversity legislation impacts ethnic, orientation, and gender groups as well as those of age, appearance, and perceived disability.

At least two additional resources should be used in addition to your textbook, one of which must come from the CSU Online Library. All sources should be cited and referenced properly using APA formatting. The presentation should consist of a title slide, a minimum of 10 slides of content, and a reference slide. Since this is a presentation, at least one slide should include a graphic or chart to present information.

The following link and PDF are excellent sources provided by the CSU Writing Center for PowerPoint best practices and basic instructions for creating a presentation.

Discussions & Learning Activities

Question 1: Web-based recruiting

Question 2: Internal vs External Recruiting

Part A: Define and discuss INTERNAL vs. EXTERNAL recruitment practices. What are the tradeoffs of each approach? Include in your discussion an example of a situation in which each of these approaches might be particularly effective.

Part B: Discuss an example of when internal recruitment would not be effective or feasible. Then, provide an example of a situation in which an external candidate should not be considered for a position. Explain your opinions. Be sure to include an expert’s ideas (with proper citations) to support your argument.

Question 3: HR Metrics

Review some of the examples of metrics included in this week’s reading. How can HRMs use metrics to measure the success of the recruiting and selection processes? List 3 metrics that you view as most relevant. Explain your opinions. Be sure to include an expert’s ideas (with proper citations) to support your argument.

New and Improved Rewards at Work

Employers have been coming up with innovative employee rewards to boost morale and acknowledge employee needs for creativity and personal goal accomplishment. 1. Determine how innovations in employee benefits can improve the overall competitive compensation strategy of the organization.
  2. Explain how innovative benefits could be tied to specific jobs.
  3. Critique the effectiveness of equity-based rewards systems versus those with more creative approaches.
  4. Discuss the key elements of integrating innovation into a traditional total rewards program.
  5. Recommend a process that optimizes an employee-based suggestion program to continually refresh the total rewards of the organization.
  6. Use at least five (5) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not quality as academic resources.
