week 3 forum MGMT

Situational Leadership II (SLII) is the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and practical method of effectively managing and developing people, time, and resources in the world. SLII provides leaders with a model and the tools for creating open communication and developing self-reliance in those they manage. It is designed to increase the frequency and quality of conversations about performance and development. As a result, competence is developed, commitment is gained, and talented individuals are retained. SLII is recognized as both a business language and a framework for employee development because it works across cultural, linguistic, and geographical barriers. The foundation lies in teaching leaders to diagnose the needs of an individual or a team and then use the appropriate leadership style to respond to the needs of the person and the situation.

For this forum, review the figure 5.2 in the Dugan text. There are four specific leader styles aligned on the chart. They are directing, coaching, supporting and delegating. These are leader styles. There are also the follower’s developmental levels described as D1 – D4.  There is a direct relationship between the follower’s level of competence and the leader’s style.  For each developmental level there is an appropriate style of leadership that should be adopted (i.e. a style that depends on the situation).

Select one of the four leadership styles.    Choose a specific follower development level (D1 – D4) and give an example of how this leadership style and developmental level would work in real life.   In other words, create a “situation” that needs to be led and explain this concept in your forum.

Instructions:  Your initial post should be at least 250 words. Please respond to at least two other students.

Directing (S1): Highly directive behavior coupled with lower levels of supportive behaviors; provision of clear instructions about what needs to be done and how to do it; highly structured with regular feedback and monitoring of progress.

Coaching (S2): Both highly directive and supportive; clear structure and direction along with a strong investment in the individual; begins to engage the follower as an active contributor to the process as well as in decision making.

Supporting (S3): Lower levels of directive behaviors coupled with highly supportive behaviors; shared decision making; role becomes that of facilitator to support followers, using their knowledge and skills to accomplish goals.

Delegating (S4): Lower levels of both directive and supportive behaviors; locus of control shifts to the follower for decision making and task direction; focus on monitoring and offering support and growth opportunities. The leader’s style should progress over time from directing th

Discussion: Federal Contract Compliance and EEO

: F

A voluntary self-identification form required by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) for federal contractors asks job applicants with disabilities to self-identify as disabled. This form is designed to help federal contractors and subcontractors meet Section 503 regulations, which set a target of seven percent of the workforce comprised of employees with disabilities. Nationally, there is a high rate of unemployment among people with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits businesses from asking specific questions about whether an applicant has a disability,

Now, for your first post, defend or challenge one of the following positions (“a” or “b”):

a. The use of the voluntary form results in benefits for everyone. The use of the form leads to expanded opportunities for people with disabilities, Moreover, through use of the form, employers have a better understanding of the composition and needs of their workforce, leading to higher employee productivity, which, in turn, benefits society.

or

b.  Applicants with disabilities should proceed with caution before self-identifying as disabled on this voluntary form. The employer may be able to satisfy some federal contracting requirements through these forms, but not every HR department is ethical and can be trusted to keep this information confidential in the hiring process. An applicant should wait until he or she is hired before deciding whether to disclose any disability; especially if the applicant has a non-apparent disability.

For either “a” or “b” above, bring in additional information from at least two reputable sources (library and/or Web-based).  Also bring in your own personal experiences, as applicable.

Subsequent Posts—Module 2

Discussion: Quality of Life: Perspectives

The word city conjures up many images, drawn from personal experience and perhaps influenced by characterizations in film, literature, or other cultural expressions. Your expectation for how life should be lived may also come from multiple perspectives. Do citizens refer to a nostalgic past? Were things really better in the past? Is the economy attracting new residents? How is the city adjusting to the influx? In this Discussion, you define quality of life in a city through a particular perspective.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Read “The Secrets of the World’s Happiest Cities” and “Cities: Places Sacred, Safe, and Busy,” located in this week’s Resources area.
  • View the media in this week’s Resources area, Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Urban Studies.

By Day 3

Post a 250-word response that explains the best perspective through which to define quality of life in a city. Choose from the following perspectives:

  • Commerce
  • Public Health
  • Culture/Religion
  • History

In your post, be sure to:

  • Use the place you live to provide real-life examples of how quality of life can be measured.
  • Refer to one specific example from your course reading.

Note: Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to the week’s Learning Resources or something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

By Day 5

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ postings that contain a perspective other than yours.

  • Explain how your colleagues’ perspectives can either:
    • Align with or compliment your perspective, or
    • Contrast with or be in opposition to your perspective.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned, and/or any insights you have gained, as a result of the comments your colleagues made.

EMPLOYEE RIGHTS/SAFETY

Before starting this assignment be sure you are familiar with the following laws and their amendments:

Katz, H. C., Kochan, T. A., & Colvin, A. J. S. (2017).Employment law. An introduction to U. S. collective bargaining and labor relations. Ithaca: Cornell University Press, pg. 71-79. Retrieved from Skillsoft Books in the Trident Online Library.

U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration, About OSHA. Retrieved from https://www.osha.gov/about.html.

Prepare a 2- to 3-page paper (not counting the cover and reference pages) discussing how the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, safety laws, or other state laws might apply to the following scenario.

One of your old college roommates, Sandra, is a nurse who took a job that required her to lift 65 pounds smoothly. She was told the job had this physical strength requirement for patient safety and to ensure that teams of nurses could move patients as needed. Sandra worked for a nursing home chain that employed 900 employees.

Sandra had become pregnant and on her doctor’s advice tried to refrain from lifting 65 pounds. After she kept finding herself in situations at work that required her to do this kind of lifting, she decided to just stay home until the baby was born.

After the baby was born, Sandra went back to work, but her baby developed a medical condition that required her to see doctors frequently. Sandra didn’t have anyone else who could be a “dedicated” caregiver for her baby, so she took leave from work to tend to her child.

When Sandra’s leave was about to expire, she asked her doctor to write a note in support of extending her leave. The note wasn’t clear and suggested that the doctor thought it would be nice, but not necessary, for mother and child to be together.

Sandra’s manager told her that the nursing home wouldn’t be able to keep her job open for her any longer. However, he told her she should apply to the company again as a new-hire when she was ready to get back to work.

Your paper should address the following:

1. Discern and discuss which laws may protect Sandra based on the given facts.

2. Identify specific impediments that might inhibit Sandra from availing herself of these protections.

3. Explain if Sandra’s employer might have opened itself to legal liabilities and if so why.

Description:

This comprehensive textbook provides an introduction to collective bargaining and labor relations with a focus on developments in the United States. It is appropriate for students, policy analysts, and labor relations professionals including unionists, managers, and neutrals. A three-tiered strategic choice framework unifies the text, and the authors’thorough grounding in labor history and labor law assists students in learning the basics. In addition to traditional labor relations, the authors address emerging forms of collective representation and movements that address income inequality in novel ways.Harry C. Katz, Thomas A. Kochan, and Alexander J. S. Colvin provide numerous contemporary illustrations of business and union strategies. They consider the processes of contract negotiation and contract administration with frequent comparisons to nonunion practices and developments, and a full chapter is devoted to special aspects of the public sector. An Introduction to U.S. Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations has an international scope, covering labor rights issues associated with the global supply chain as well as the growing influence of NGOs and cross-national unionism. The authors also compare how labor relations systems in Germany, Japan, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa compare to practices in the United States. The textbook is supplemented by a website (ilr.cornell.edu/scheinman-institute) that features an extensive Instructor’s Manual with a test bank, PowerPoint chapter outlines, mock bargaining exercises, organizing cases, grievance cases, and classroom-ready current events materials.
