Practical Application and Research Skills

Read the article “Adult Education and the Social Media Revolution” located in the e-reserves section of the course under “Course Resources.” Pay particular attention to the references the article authors make to the works of others.

Every citation within this article is essentially a head nod to other authors who have written about the same or similar topics. Were they all in the same room, you could imagine the authors of this article pointing to or calling out those other authors while speaking. This is what we mean when we refer to research and writing as one big conversation, with all of the participants listening and responding to one another.

In a discussion post, point to an example from this article and explain how the authors do one of the following:

  • refer to another work in order to give legitimacy to their own point;
  • refer to another work in order to build upon the ideas of others; or
  • refer to another work in order to challenge that work.

If you select “refer to another work in order to give legitimacy to their own point,” first describe what the authors’ point is, then describe how the cited article supports that point.

If you select “refer to another work in order to build upon the ideas of others,” first describe what the ideas are, then describe how the authors build upon those ideas.

If you select “refer to another work in order to challenge that work”, first describe what is being challenged, then describe how the authors are challenging the cited work.

Then, give an example from your own life in which you rely upon the work of others to complete a task or accomplish a goal. (This example might be from your workplace, community, or academic life.)

Ethics

Compose 2-3 pages in which you respond to a medical ethics dilemma.

Ethics is about doing what is right. Traditional normative theories express this goal in one of three ways:

  • Virtue Ethics
    • Seek personal excellence by cultivating virtuous habits.
    • Aristotle: Achieve self-sufficiency through moderation.
  • Deontological Ethics
    • Do your duty by following the rules.
    • Kant: Act as any rational agent is bound by universal law.
  • Consequentialist Ethics
    • Try to make the world a better place by producing good outcomes.
    • Mill: Generate more pleasure and less pain for everyone.

Applying ethical theories to everyday life is not easy, as we consider virtues, duties, and results:

  • Virtue Ethics
    • Strengths: Respect for people, moral education, continuing progress.
    • Problems: No direct advice for specific situations, excuse for self-serving.
  • Deontological Ethics
    • Strengths: Simple application of rules, avoid personal responsibility.
    • Problems: Rigidly strict, conflicting rules, sometimes bad consequences.
  • Consequentialist Ethics
    • Strengths: Flexibility in circumstances, outcomes publicly discernible.
    • Problems: Hard to predict results accurately, especially over the long run.

Using all three is fine, but we need to think through how they cohere or diverge.

To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of the business community.

As you think about applying ethical theory, consider addressing one of the following questions:

  • Which of the three approaches to ethical theory makes the most sense, and why?
  • When might Aristotle, Kant, and Mill disagree about how to handle a specific case?
  • What theoretical approach are

Assessment Overview

You have now studied the three approaches to ethical theory (deontological, consequentialist, and virtue theory) as exemplified in the work of Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill, and Aristotle. Your assessment is to write an essay applying these three approaches to the following practical case:

You are called to consult in the critical care unit of your local hospital. The hospital admits JoEllen, 53, after she takes an overdose of prescription medications with alcohol. On admission, she says, “Not supposed to be here . . . ” and soon becomes uncommunicative. As her condition deteriorates rapidly, her son arrives with a notarized advance directive in which JoEllen specifically asks not to be placed on life support. What should you recommend to the attending health professionals?

human resource management 6200

The human brain receives information from its environment constantly, but how does it make sense of all this information? One way is through the use of schemas, which are mental structures that help the mind organize new information and relate it to old information and experiences. By relating information in this way, humans can more quickly process experiences and make judgments and decisions. When you meet someone new, your brain automatically uses these schemas to identify characteristics or behavior that would allow you to classify the person into a group that you may already know. While an adaptive and helpful strategy that the human brain possesses, when taken to an extreme, it could lead to the formation of unhelpful or incorrect stereotypes about groups.

When working with clients from diverse groups, human and social services professionals need to bring conscious thought to their perceptions of people, in addition to the automatic thinking that humans engage in. In other words, use your schemas and acknowledge commonalities, but also research information on groups you work with, take the time to become aware of individual differences, and always seek to bring cultural sensitivity to your understanding of and practice with clients.

For this Discussion, you compare cultural values of three broadly defined groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, and Caucasians. You then consider how you would practice cultural awareness and sensitivity when providing services to members of each group.

FACILITIES PLANNING, WAREHOUSING, AND DISTRIBUTION CENTERS- WALMART

Assignment Overview

Location and Utilization Considerations

Changing consumer requirements for expedited delivery caused a shift in warehousing operations, including location and utilization to support transport to both brick-and-mortar locations as well as consumers. The tight turnaround times for stocked products necessitates vehicle and truck ingress/egress and loading which means focusing on local zoning requirements, traffic studies, and public outcry, which may delay the project. Warehouses that support multiple customers add another level of complexity to the scenario. Major cities and small towns often react to an increase in warehouses and associated increased traffic flow. Some locations provide tax breaks to attract warehouses for long-term tax base and employment opportunities. The background readings provide an overview of developments in warehouse location selection.

SLP Assignment

Selecting the location of a warehouse or distribution center is crucial and depends on many factors, including proximity to transportation hubs, area zoning, available workforce, and connection with the company’s logistics network. For this SLP, your task is to research an area that a company has chosen for its distribution center for non-perishable items. NOTE: Select an area in the U.S. with which you have familiarity.

Comparison of Two Choices: Location Summary

  • Provide an overview of the company’s proposed distribution center: size, type of product(s) to be accommodated (based on the scenario you are creating).
  • Specify the chosen general location (based on the scenario you are creating).
  • Provide pertinent Census data (don’t copy tables); enter two possible municipalities and county/counties into the search and the database will list the most recent government data for each in tabular format.
  • Compare the choices.
The written portion of the section will be one-half page in length (tabular data not included in page count).

Property Search

Look for two available properties: either vacant land, warehouse space, or a building that can be converted to a warehouse/distribution facility in two different cities in the chosen area. There are multiple companies that list commercial properties. Use LoopNet or search “commercial properties listing” and major real estate companies will have links for commercial property listings.

  • Explain how each property matches requirements enumerated in the first section.
  • Research the area and discuss proximity to applicable transportation hubs (air, rail, port, highways).
This portion of the paper will be one-half page in length.

Municipality and County’s Economic Development

  • Go to each municipality’s official website and search for incentives, programs, or tools available for new businesses. Explain what is available to make the property appealing.
  • Go to each county website and search for incentives, programs, or tools available for new businesses. Explain what is available to make the property appealing.
This portion of the paper will be one-half page in length.

Location Choice

  • Based on the research, which property will work best for the proposed distribution center?
This portion of the paper will be ¾–1 page in length.

The paper should be written in the third person; this means words like “I,” “we,” and “you” are not appropriate. For more information, see Differences Between First and Third Person. The excessive use of quotes or unoriginal content will directly impact performance since it suggests lack of comprehension and indicates that a student may not have mastered the concepts.
