• Even when customers may fit the profile of the type of consumers who would purchase a product, they still may not make the purchase. Hence, some companies use advertising to remind customers that their products help consumers fit a particular social image. Some companies use rebates and coupons to entice customers to buy their products instead of other products. Still other firms rely on sales to entice consumers to buy. Although companies should use a variety of methods, which particular method do you believe is most useful and why?• Many companies attempt to use customers’ own attitudes toward the world as a means of developing a relationship with the customers. What is an example of a promotional campaign you have seen a company use to try to influence customer beliefs to create a demand for a certain product? What were the product and the company selling the product? What was the media and promotion campaign? What belief system do you think the company was trying to use to connect with customers? Following are some examples: o A company that sells weight-loss products might show more television commercials during the month of January because it hopes to capitalize on some customers’ beliefs that they should make a New Year’s resolution to become healthier.o Proctor and Gamble created a sweepstakes to reward customers for lowering their energy consumption by using the Cold Water Tide product. By participating in the program, customers were able to feel like they were making a difference in reducing energy consumption. In this way, Proctor and Gamble was using customer attitudes to promote its product.• Assessment Instructions

Michelle has told you that the board is now ready to see the final presentation of your plan for MM’s new product.

“They are very eager to see what we have been working on during the past few weeks,” she says excitedly. “I am sure they will love the plan and am looking forward to your presentation.””Thanks,” you respond, feeling a few butterflies in your stomach. “I am looking forward to the presentation also. I think we have covered all of the bases and I am sure we have a solid plan.  I have jotted down the order of items to cover that I think will be best for the presentation. What do you think?”
Objectives of plan
Marketing research used to select target market
Product
Pricing
Distribution
Promotional Strategies
Measuring results
Contingency Plan”This looks like a solid format for the presentation. Let me know if you have any questions and I will be happy to help,” Michelle says exiting your office.

You close the door of your office so you can fully concentrate on preparing your presentation. You have a lot of material to cover, but you have been working on this plan for weeks. Now it’s just a matter of formulating a cohesive strategy and anticipating any questions that may arise during the presentation.

  • What might somebody else say to show your proposed solution is wrong?
  • What could you say to show s/he is wrong?
  • What alternative solution might someone else recommend?
  • What reasons might someone provide to support their solution?
  • How would you respond to their reasons?
  • Is there a compromise or creative solution?

Chapter 7

Discussion Questions

1.        1.Do you agree with the following statement: “With proper planning it is possible to eliminate most/all risks from a project.”  Why or why not?

Problem

  1.  Assessing Risk and Benefits.  Suppose you are a member of a project team that is evaluating the bids of potential contractors for developing some sub-assemblies for your project.  Your boss makes it clear that any successful bid must demonstrate a balance between risk and price.  Explain how this is so; specifically, why are price and risk seen as equally important but opposite issues in determining the winner of the contract?  Is a low price/high risk bid acceptable?  Is a high price/low risk bid acceptable?  Why or why not?

Chapter 8

Discussion Questions (DQ):

  1. Why is cost estimation such an important component of project planning?  Discuss how it links together with the Work Breakdown Structure and project schedule?
  2. Think of an example of parametric estimating in your personal experience, such as the use of a cost multiplier based on a similar, past cost.  Did parametric estimating work or not.  Discuss the reasons why.
  3. Would you prefer the use of bottom-up or top-down budgeting for project cost control?  What are the advantages and disadvantages with each approach?

Problem:

  1. Calculate the direct cost of labor for a project team member using the following data:

Hourly rate:                 $35/hr.

Hours needed:             150

Overhead rate:             55%

        2. Assume that overhead is charged on a flat rate basis.Each member of the project is assigned an overhead charge of $150/week.What would the direct cost of labor be for an employee, given that she is  assigned to the project for 200 hours at $10.50/hour?

        3. It took MegaTech, Inc. 100,000 labor-hours to produce the first of several oil drilling rigs for Antarctic exploration.Your company, Natural Resources, Inc. has agreed to purchase the fifth oil drilling rig from their manufacturing yard. Assume that                          MegaTech experiences a learning rate of 80%.At a labor rate of $35 per hour, what should you, as the purchasing agent expect to pay for the fifth unit?Remember, the simplified formula for calculating learning rate time is given as:

TN = T1C

Where TN = Time needed to produce the Nth unit

      T1        = Time needed to produce the first unit

                  C         = Learning curve coefficient
