Jill Bartok is a line supervisor for an East Coast center for Speedy Delivery Services. This high-speed delivery company has both national and international deliveries ongoing continually. The area where Jill works is secured and monitored. Loaders and handlers process thousands of parcels every day. Jill has four crews whose shifts normally overlap. Crew 2 has the 3 PM to midnight shift. Bob Carnaghan is the crew chief and is responsible for the orderly flow of packages from the receiving dock to the shipping dock. This includes packages that have to be shipped out from the local franchise shipping stores. Jill receives a note from Jim Ferguson, crew chief of Crew 3, that a small access door that should usually be locked has been found unsecured for the past two nights just after the start of the 11 PM to 8 AM shift. The security camera in that area does not quite cover the door itself. There have been no other reports of problems in that area. Review of the security tapes shows normal flow of workers in and around the door for the past two nights. Jill is concerned that the door may have been left unsecured prior to being found open by Jim Ferguson. The door opens to a hall that connects to the employee break room that is not in a secured part of the facility. Jill decides to go to HR to discuss possibilities.

  • Is there a security problem? If yes, is it a major problem?
  • What actions, if any, should HR take?

Discussion 02: Healthcare Dilemma

HA3300D – Healthcare Policy and Ethics

Discussion 02: Healthcare Dilemma

Revisit the ethical dilemma you identified in Learning Activity 2. In 3 – 4 complete sentences, discuss the event or situation, what the outcome was, and how it was addressed (or if it was addressed).

Next, consider: What ethical theories and theorists were most “at play” in this situation? That is, in this situation, which theories would help someone the most with making an ethical decision? Which theories seem to have influenced the decisions the major actors made?

Finally, reflect: After this week’s reading and activities, has your thinking about how you would handle this situation changed? If so, how and why? If not, why not?

Your initial post should be 8 – 10 sentences in length and include an APA-style references list.

Being the leader

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your ideas, analysis, and comments supported with application of course learning materials. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Review the UWEAR and PALEDENIM scenario found here.

You will first meet with the CEOs of each organization, Theresa Tramlin and Mike Miller, to help them understand their important leadership roles for the success of the merger.

The merger is a significant change for both organizations; there is growing anxiety and uncertainty among the employees of both organizations. The goal is to complete the merger in a way that maintains employee performance and allegiance to the merged organization. Both CEOs were promoted from managerial positions, so one of your tasks is to help them understand how to distinguish the two roles.

Please discuss the following with your classmates:

  • In your opinion, what is the difference between being a manager and being a leader?
  • Read research findings by Kabacoff (1998) that, although men and women are perceived as equally effective in leading, women tend to focus more on production, attaining results, and people, while men tend to focus on strategic planning, organization vision, and business tasks.
  • Considering this, in your opinion, which leadership theory or style will be effective when leading the merger and why?

Physicians as Practice Administrators

Physician practices are a key component of the U.S. health care system. According to the text, a significant amount of revenue that the health care industry generates can be directly linked to the care that physicians provide for their patients. In addition, physicians in a medical practice add to this revenue stream by admitting patients to a hospital, prescribing prescription medication, ordering home health services and medical equipment, and referring their patients to other health care providers for care and treatment. As a future health care administrator, it is important for you to demonstrate an understanding of the challenges and opportunities that today’s physicians face in providing quality health care services.

Write a 4–6 page paper in which you:

  1. Compare the main various forms of medical group practice. Next, select the form that would be most attractive to a newly licensed physician. Justify your selection.
  2. Analyze how the role of the physician in a medical practice has changed in the past twenty years. Assess three specific challenges that today’s physicians face as members of a medical group practice. Support your response.
  3. Suggest three specific competencies that a physician should demonstrate to be successful as a practice manager. Next, determine three hurdles that a physician might face as the leader of a group practice. Provide rationale for your response.
  4. Assess the value of effective Human Resources Management (HRM) in a medical practice. Suggest three functions of HRM necessary to attract and retain the type of employees needed for the practice in order to achieve long-term success. Support your recommendations with specific examples of how each function impacts the overall success of the practice.
  5. Determine three aspects of consumer behavior that the physician’s practice management should consider as part of an effective marketing strategy for medical practices. Provide a rationale for your response.
  6. Use at least three quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia does not qualify as an academic resource.

Determine physician competencies, HRM functions, and marketing strategies a group practice must assume to ensure long-term success of the practice
