“Week 9 Discussion” Ch. 10 – Internal Selection:

After reading Ch. 10, review Exhibit 10.8 and scan the predictors listed in the left column.  This exhibit shows an example of substantive assessment methods, which could be used for internal selection.   Each of these methods is discussed, starting on p. 540.  Be sure to respond to both parts of this week’s discussion.

Please respond to the following:

Choose three (3) internal selection methods/factors that you believe would be most reliable for promoting employees within an organization. Next, describe two (2) reasons why an organization should consider these three (3) factors when promoting employees within an organization. Justify your response.

Based on the case study Changing a Promotion  (Pg. 544 – Pg. 545), determine what you believe are the three (3) primary weaknesses in BioGlass Inc.’s promotion policy. Next, describe two (2) solutions to address the identified weaknesses. Support your rationale.

Assessment 3

• Create and record a presentation for new employees and volunteers to understand how key historical events in U.S. history are connected to their work and impact society today.

Note: The first three assessments in this course build on each other; therefore, it is essential that you complete them in the order presented.

As you complete your Lessons From History Presentation assessment, you will combine all of the four skills you have practiced in this course to create and present a report about a specific issue based on historical events and sources. Just as if you were running for political office, you will need to understand the key principles of your presentation and maximize the capabilities of the medium you are using. And while this assessment focuses on one medium—a presentation in PowerPoint—your agility skill gives you the ability to choose other mediums (such as email, an academic paper, a video recording, or a public speech) in the future. No matter whether you are presenting at an industry event, welcoming a group of donors to an appreciation brunch, fighting a traffic ticket in court, speaking at your child’s career day, or petitioning your local town board, these same skills can help you continue to drive your message home in your life and career.

• Essential Skills

If you are getting a group of close friends together for lunch, you probably wouldn’t type up a formal invitation and mail it to them. If you are throwing a fancy wedding, you most likely wouldn’t tell your guests about it through a hasty text message with lots of misspelled words. If you decide to run for office, you probably would not announce your candidacy through a shaky video on a private Instagram account. You wouldn’t do these things because they would not send the right message (what you’re saying) to your audience, nor would they deliver that message through the best medium (how you’re saying it).

Being able to share relevant information in a way that is easily accessible and appropriate requires a combination of your technology, problem-solving, and communication skills, as well as your agility skill to help you understand when and how to pivot to reach your goals. You will continue learning to create and deliver a message (through your presentation) using your communication skill, and you will practice how to deliver that message using your technology skill.

COMPENSATION

Shannon Albright has an accounting degree from a U.S. accredited university. She also became certified as a CPA (certified public accountant). Upon graduation, she was offered and accepted an entry-level accounting position at a firm in Atlanta, GA. She has been gainfully employed with this firm for the last 5 years. Recently she interviewed with your firm, which is located in Boston, MA. You, working for the human resources department, want to hire Shannon for your organization’s financial accountant position.

You know Shannon is a strong candidate, and you want to develop a competitive offer that will attract Shannon yet still fit within the company’s budget and compensation structure (i.e., considering both internal and external equity).

With this in mind, you are asked to prepare the offer for Shannon. The following will be included in this package and should be specific to Shannon and this situation:

  • Compensation package: What pay rate will you offer (using salary survey research as support)? What else may be included in the compensation package?
  • Incentive plan: What performance-based incentives does this offer include?
  • Benefits plan: What specific benefit plans does this offer include?

It is important to provide the necessary supporting details to explain the incentives and benefits being offered. The more details you provide, the better educated Shannon will be to make her decision to accept.

Along with these packages, you will include a 1-page cover letter addressed to your supervisor that outlines what you propose to offer.

  • This cover letter should explain and justify the compensation package, incentive plan, and benefits plan.
  • Make sure to discuss job location and experience level
  • Your detailed plans will then follow that cover page.

Using the Internet and library, locate all necessary information for constructing these 3 packages. This is a research assignment so be sure to include and cite your research within the paper using APA style.

Assignment

COMPETITION – MARKET RESEARCH MANAGER ANALYSIS

Due Date

Week 10

Note: While representative of possible situations faced by Target & Walmart, all scenarios in this assignment are fictional.

Real Business

As you learned this week, understanding your competition and adjusting your own business accordingly is critical to a business’s success. A large discount retail store like Target competes not only with other discount retail store stores but also with those stores that offer just some of the products Target does, such as grocery stores. Keeping track of all these competitors is quite a task; that’s why large companies have a team of market researchers dedicated to managing that research.

Your Role

This week, you’ll assume the role of a Market Research Manager at Target.

WHAT IS A MARKET RESEARCH MANAGER?

Market Research Managers are responsible for creating and improving processes for gathering information on various market conditions, competitors, and consumer trends in their companies’ industries. They are typically responsible for managing a team of researchers and reporting their findings to the head of the department. Teams across the company then use these findings to help improve products, guide marketing efforts, and more.

As a Market Research Manager, part of your role is to consistently analyze Target’s position relative to its competitors and report on these findings. As part of this process, you complete a SWOT analysis for each of Target’s main competitors each quarter. The quarter is coming to a close, and your boss has asked for the latest SWOT analysis for Walmart.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Research

Search online and find 1-3 articles that discuss the competition between Target and Walmart. For each article:

  • Provide a link to the article.
  • Identify which aspects of the article will be helpful as you conduct your SWOT analysis.

Step 2: Strengths

Based on your own experiences shopping at Target and Walmart and the research you conducted:

  • Identify 1-2 strengths Target has in comparison to Walmart. For each strength, explain your rationale.

Step 3: Weaknesses

Based on your own experiences shopping at Target and Walmart and the research you conducted:

  • Identify 1-2 weaknesses Target has in comparison to Walmart. For each weakness, explain your rationale.

Step 4: Opportunities

Based on your own experiences shopping at Target and Walmart and the research you conducted:

  • Identify 1-2 possible opportunities Target has to be more competitive with Walmart. For each opportunity, explain your rationale.

Step 5: Threats

Based on your own experiences shopping at Target and Walmart and the research you conducted:

  • Identify 1-2 possible threats that might diminish Target’s competitiveness with Walmart. For each threat, explain your rationale.

Step 6: Who Will Come Out Ahead?

Based on your SWOT analysis, do think that Target or Walmart is better positioned over the long term to come out ahead? Why?

Step 7: Real-World Application

Conduct a SWOT analysis for your company and one of its biggest competitors using the methodology outlined in Steps 1-6.
