Steve is a single father raising his daughter after Emily’s mother was killed in a motor vehicle accident (MVA). Steve is doing a great job of raising Emily by himself, but he still has some concerns about his abilities as a father. He has several questions for the nurse practitioner. The nurse practitioner’s examination of Emily is unremarkable and she is growing and developing as expected. (Learning Objectives 6 and 7)

A. What should the nurse practitioner include when teaching Steve about promoting healthy eating habits and appropriate sleep and rest?

B. What can the nurse practitioner offer Steve regarding promoting appropriate discipline with Emily?

C. Since Steve is a single parent and sole income earner, he is required to place Emily in day care while he is at work. Steve is concerned about the effects of day care on Emily’s development. What can the nurse practitioner teach Steve about child care?

Part 1

Use the article below, chapters 6-8 in your textbook, and the movie (“Miss Evers’ Boys”) to help guide your answers. Most of these questions do not have a right or wrong answer.

  • Was this study unethical in 1932?
    • Why or why not?
    • If you feel the study was ethical, was there a point when it became unethical?
    • Did the study provide valuable information?
  • How could the study have been done differently?
  • How do you think the subjects felt about their participation?
    • Did they think they were being treated unfairly?
    • Does the answer change over time (1930s, 1940s, 1950s, etc.)?
    • Should they have thought to question the MDs or Nurse Rivers?
  • What was the impact of recruiting at churches and schools on test subjects?
  • What was Nurse Rivers’ role in the project?
    • What is your opinion of her role?
  • Was Nurse Rivers negligent or did she commit malpractice?
    • Why or why not?
  • Think of a research question or study pertinent to a specific race, ethnicity, or culture.
    • How would you ensure the ethical recruitment of subjects?
  • Imagine you are the nurse in a modern-day, ethical, TSS-like study.
    • How would you use each of the five elements of cultural competence for the selected population?
  • Which modern-day, government agencies could be involved in a health-related research study?
    • How might they be involved?

Part 2

Lack of diversity in clinical trials and research has increasingly been highlighted as a problem.

  • Hypothesize one reason (whether methodological, social, ethical, or other) why a lack of diversity has been a persistent issue in clinical trials and research.
  • What is one potential solution for your hypothesized reason?

Your initial post should be at least 400 words and supported with at least one additional scholarly source.

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

The post and responses are valued at 75 points. Please review post and response expectations. Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets criteria.

Annotated bibliographies

Annotated bibliographies are used to organize and summarize research papers for future reference. In this class you will read several papers: one scientific article and several popular media articles about scientific topics. For this assignment you should read the articles, then write a short synopsis or summary of the major points in each article. Each summary should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs. This can be accomplished by writing a fairly brief description of the major sections in a scientific research article: introduction, methods, results, discussion/conclusion. While popular media articles are less focused on methods, they often have the other sections, although you may have to read carefully to find them. A full bibliographical reference should also be included for each article.

To receive full credit for this assignment you should read the following articles and provide a synopsis and full citation for each (pdfs of the articles can be found on Canvas):

1. A powerful new way to edit DNA. A. Pollack, The New York Times.

2. The CRISPR quandary. J. Kahn, The New York Times

3. Gene editing for ‘designer babies?’ Highly unlikely, scientists say. P. Belluck, The New York Times.

4. Factors that alter rumen microbial ecology. J. Russell and J. Rychlik, Science.

You may use either APA or MLA style for your citation, but be consistent and use one style for all citations. More information about proper citation can be found on the University libraries website: https://guides.lib.wayne.edu/c.php?g=939080&

NRS-440-VN0502 Trends and Issues

This is a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) assignment.

The purpose of this assignment is to assess leadership styles, traits, and practices as a nursing professional, establish the importance of effective interprofessional communication as a leader in nursing, and to explore the role of servant leadership in nursing practice.

Read the study materials on leadership and complete the topic quiz activities to better understand your leadership qualities.

Upon completion, summarize and share with your group what you learned about your specific leadership qualities, so you can become familiar with how you are similar and different from your peers when it comes to being a leader.

As a group, review the study materials related to servant leadership. Using what you have learned about the tenets of servant leadership and traits and practices of successful leaders, create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes. Add an additional slide for references at the end of your presentation.

Include the following in your presentation:

  1. Each group member: Create a slide that summarizes your leadership style, traits, and practices.
  2. Compare the personal leadership styles of your group members, including commonalities between group members’ strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Explain why it is important for nursing professionals to be aware of their personal leadership style, traits, and practices.
  4. Discuss what leadership traits and styles are necessary to be an effective communicator. Explain the importance of leaders adapting communication approaches when working interprofessionally (across ancillary departments, vendors, community members).
  5. Discuss how nursing professionals can benefit from integrating the tenets of servant leadership to empower and influence others as they lead.
  6. Discuss how leaders who practice servant leadership and have a strong understanding of their personal leadership traits can successfully lead others and navigate the unique challenges that are part of nursing and health care. Provide two examples that illustrate your main ideas.

You are required to cite to a minimum of three sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice.

Refer to the resource, “Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations,” located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

PowerPoint Presentation

Due December 1st

Create a PowerPoint presentation and answer the following question in 1-2 slide using each component of the MAP-IT project (mobilize, assess, plan, implement and track) the link to assess this is provided below.

PICOT QUESTION:  In adults living in assisted living, does participation in social activity positively impact feeling of loneliness?

Question: In adults living in assisted living, does participation in social activity positively impact feeling of lonlines?

Population of interest (P) = Adults residing in assisted living facilities

Variable of Interest = Different activities plan (dance group, movies, games)

The Intervention or Interest (I) = The use of activities in adult residing in assisted living facilities to prevent loneliness

Comparison of Interest (C) = No Activities

Outcome of Interest (O) = To promote interaction and prevent loneliness in adult living in assissted living facilities

Time (T) = Within 3 months of stay.

Each MAP-IT segment  to follow

Mobilize,

Questions to Ask and Answer:

  • What is the vision and mission of the coalition?
  • Why do I want to bring people together?
  • Who should be represented?
  • Who are the potential partners (organizations and businesses) in my community?

Assess

 Questions to Ask and Answer:

  • Who is affected and how?
  • What resources do we have?
  • What resources do we need?

Assess both needs and assets (resources) in your community.
This will help you get a sense of what you can do, versus what you would like to do.

Plan

Questions to Ask and Answer:

  • What is our goal?
  • What do we need to do to reach our goal? Who will do it?
  • How will we know when we have reached our goal?

A good plan includes clear objectives and concrete steps to achieve them.
The objectives you set will be specific to your issue or community; they do not have to be exactly the same as the ones in Healthy People 2020.

Consider your intervention points.
Where can you create change?

Think about how you will measure your progress.
How will you know if you are successful?

When setting objectives, remember to state exactly what is to be achieved. What is expected to change, by how much, and by when? Make your objectives challenging, yet realistic.

Remember: Objectives need a target. A target is the desired amount of change (reflected by a number or percentage). A target needs a baseline (where you are now—your first data point).

Implement

 Questions to Ask and Answer:

  • Are we following our plan?
  • What can we do better?

First, create a detailed workplan that lays out concrete action steps, identifies who is responsible for completing them, and sets a timeline and/or deadlines.

Make sure all partners are on board with the workplan.

Next, consider identifying a single point of contact to manage the process and ensure that things get done.

Be sure to share responsibilities across coalition members. Do not forget to periodically:

  • Bring in new partners for a boost of energy and fresh ideas.
  • Check in with existing partners often to see if they have suggestions or concerns.

Get the word out: develop a communication plan.

Convene kick-off events, activities, and community meetings to showcase your accomplishments (and partners).

Tract

Questions to Ask and Answer:

  • Are we evaluating our work?
  • Did we follow the plan?
  • What did we change?
  • Did we reach our goal?

Plan regular evaluations to measure and track your progress over time.

Consider partnering with a local university or state center for health statistics to help with data tracking. Some things to think about when you are evaluating data over time:

  • Data Quality: Be sure to check for standardization of data collection, analysis, and structure of questions.
  • Limitations of Self-Reported Data: When you are relying on self-reported data (such as exercise frequency or income), be aware of self-reporting bias.
  • Data Validity and Reliability: Watch out for revisions of survey questions and/or the development of new data collection systems. This could affect the validity of your responses over time. (Enlist a statistician to help with validity and reliability testing.)
  • Data Availability: Data collection efforts are not always performed on a regular basis.

Do not forget to share your progress—and successes—with your community.
If you see a positive trend in data, issue a press release or announcement.

Follow the above information provided and create a POWERPOINT PRESENTATION ADDRESSING THE ABOVE.

nursing

Our legacy in nursing as a profession began with Florence Nightingale and now it continues with you!

Add a new chapter to your journey and predict challenges facing nursing in the future.

  • How do you see yourself leading others to resolve these issues.
  • Comment on peer presentations. If students have selected a peer’s response several times, move onto another response so all students receive comments from peers.
  • Incorporate ways of knowing through personal experiences, published empirical and theoretical sources to support your discussion, challenges and questions facing traditions, and/or new meanings that emerged from this discussion.
