NURSING PAPERS

Complete modules within the QSEN Faculty Learning Modules at https://qsen.org/faculty-resources/courses/learning-modules/. There are 18 modules offered. For each module completed, write a one to two-page reflection of what you learned within the module and how you will use this information as a future MSN-prepared nurse educator in the academic or professional development setting. Include responses to the discussion/self-reflection questions at the end of each module.

CONSORT

Step 1. Critical:  all else depends on your finding a Randomized Controlled (Clinical) Trial Peer-Reviewed Journal Article (Level II Evidence)  Review Figure 1.1,~ p. 13 of your textbook for the Level of Evidence Pyramid, which shows an RCT is at Level II. When you communicate with physicians about an article, they respect the article more when it is at least on the Level II evidence pyramid, which suggests more credibility and possibly better input regarding outcomes of care.  Find your peer-reviewed Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) article related to your area of interest.  If you are not sure of how to find articles using our DCN Databases,do the following:

  1. Go to the DCN Home Page
  2. Notice that there are 3 columns and 3 rows, each with a green heading category.  Go to the second row, first column, and click on Databases. Once your see the top heading, Database Access, look below and see “For DCN Students: Database Use Tutorial (MP4 Recording). Study the tutorial, and it will assist you in finding a Randomized Controlled (Clinical) Trial article
  3. If you need further assistance with finding an article after you review the tutorial, email Mr. Madsen, Director of the LRC. He has a Masters of Library Services degree, and can assist you in finding articles that you may not be able to access. If you find an article that charges a fee, e-mail Mr. Madsen the article you need, and he can usually get the full text article for you at no charge. His email address is [email protected].

Step 2.  Once you have your article, read it, and then look at the CONSORT Checklist, and write the page number in the article that has the information the checklist requires. (FYI, researchers who publish their research use this checklist to be sure they have everything in their article, or it is often not accepted by premier scholarly publishers). The checklist is worth 25 points, as it takes time and discernment to do it correctly.

Step 3:  Once your fill out the CONSORT CHECKLIST (25 points), you must then write a formal summary of the Analysis of Strengths and Weaknesses (worth 8 points) that you will notice is on the CONSORT checklist. The following steps are to assist you in distilling the specifics for what is required in the Analysis of Strengths and Weaknesses for the CONSORT checklist. .

Step 4  Specifics of the ANALYSIS OF STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES.  Review ~p. 9 of your research textbook, and then note how to write

  1. Introduction  (1 point)

+ Purpose of the RCT (discuss)

  1. Overall Strengths and Weaknesses  (1 point)

                  +  Research Design (Discuss)

     methods, instruments, measurements or

procedures sections of article); statistics; Level of Evidence and

implications; cause-effect measurement; any threats to internal

     or external validity

  1. Ethics (1 point)

Unit 5 Assessment – Monomyth and Superhero, Recycled Themes

Heroes have always been a part of written stories. Heroes from Greek mythology often had super-human characteristics, but also had fatal flaws, and often met with tragic ends because of these flaws. The era post World War I and II created comic book heroes that did not seem to have any flaws. The current super-heroes all seem to be dark heroes – heroes that may not always do acceptable (legal) things, but overall may have good intentions. One similarity that many hero stories share is the monomyth, or hero’s journey, as you read about in this week’s unit.

Be sure to address the following in your presentation:

  • Discuss how the character of one Hero or Superhero (fictional) reflects the times that they are written. You may select a fictional hero from any era, however, you should be comfortable describing that era’s culture as well.
  • Explain why this hero would resonate with the general era in which they were written.
  • Describe the elements of the monomyth that are apparent in this hero’s story. HINT! Utilize a template to break down each part of the monomyth.

Specifications:

Submission: A 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation or Prezi that answers the questions posed above. Include speaker notes or a voice-over, images, and videos where applicable.

 In your presentation:

  • Provide speaker’s notes on the PowerPoint to accompany each slide. If you choose speaker’s notes, the total word count of your notes should be 800-1000 words.
  • Include a title slide and include your references page in APA format on the last slide of the presentation.

Summative Assignment: Critique of Research Article

Week 10: Summative Assignment: Critique of Research Article

A research critique demonstrates your ability to critically read an investigative study. For this assignment, choose a research article related to nursing or medicine to critique.

  • Articles used for one assignment can’t be used for the other assignments (students should find new research articles for each assignment).
  • The selected articles should be original research articles. Review articles, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, and systemic review should not be used.
  • Mixed-methods studies should not be used.

Your critique should include the following:

Research Problem/Purpose

  • State the problem clearly as it is presented in the report.
  • Have the investigators placed the study problem within the context of existing knowledge?
  • Will the study solve a problem relevant to nursing?
  • State the purpose of the research.

Review of the Literature

  • Identify the concepts explored in the literature review.
  • Were the references current? If not, what do you think the reasons are?

Theoretical Framework

  • Are the theoretical concepts defined and related to the research?
  • Does the research draw solely on nursing theory or does it draw on theory from other disciplines?
  • Is a theoretical framework stated in this research piece?
  • If not, suggest one that might be suitable for the study.

Variables/Hypotheses/Questions/Assumptions

  • What are the independent and dependent variables in this study?
  • Are the operational definitions of the variables given? If so, are they concrete and measurable?
  • Is the research question or the hypothesis stated? What is it?

Methodology

  • What type of design (quantitative, qualitative, and type) was used in this study?
  • Was inductive or deductive reasoning used in this study?
  • State the sample size and study population, sampling method, and study setting.
  • Did the investigator choose a probability or non-probability sample?
  • State the type of reliability and the validity of the measurement tools.
  • Were ethical considerations addressed?

Data Analysis

  • What data analysis tool was used?
  • How were the results presented in the study?
  • Identify at least one (1) finding.

Summary/Conclusions, Implications, and Recommendations

  • What are the strengths and limitations of the study?
  • In terms of the findings, can the researcher generalize to other populations? Explain.
  • Evaluate the findings and conclusions as to their significance for nursing.

The body of your paper should be 4–6 double-spaced pages plus a cover page and a reference page. The critique must be attached to the article and follow APA guidelines.
