Instructions
Review the following ethical dilemmas:

1. John Doe has decided to clone himself. He is sterile. He cannot find anyone to marry him. He wishes to have children. He knows that he will not be able to love a child that is adopted or not connected directly to him biologically. He will be making use of a new procedure that involves taking his skin cells to produce a twin. The twin starts out as an embryo and grows into a child. The child in this case will have the same genetic information as John Doe. John Doe and his child will be twins.
2. Jane Doe is eighteen. For as long as she can remember she has been sexually attracted to other females. Her parents belong to a religion that has a religious text stating that God forbids one to be a lesbian. This religion goes on further to say that lesbians will be punished in the afterlife. Jane Doe is debating whether she should tell her parents about her sexual attraction. She has not yet decided if she should come out to her parents and live as a lesbian now that she is a legal adult.
3. Joe and Mary are a couple. Before becoming sterile, they had a child. This child died of a rare disease. Joe and Mary miss their child terribly. They have heard that there is a new IVF procedure that can ensure that they can have another child. However, their religion forbids using IVF.

1. What is the relation between ethics and religion? Formulate and investigate the relation.
2. For each case, determine the ethical path of conduct. Then, determine what paths of conduct would be unethical
3. For each case, what would an emotivism say to appraise what you determine is the ethical form of conduct?
4. For each case, would a natural law ethicist agree with what you say is the ethical form of conduct? Why or why not?
5. Articulate, explain, and evaluate in each case an approach that makes use of divine command ethics.

Criteria

Situation/Question Selection: Selects two of the situations and thoroughly answers two of the questions.

Assignment Content: Addresses all aspects of the questions, applying professional knowledge, and research regarding weekly concepts.

Professional Communication: Presents information using clear and concise language in an organized manner (minimal errors in English grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation).

Source Integration: The paper includes reference to 2 scholarly sources and properly integrates the sources.

APA Format: Paper meets all source requirements, and is properly formatted in APA style throughout (i.e. title page, spacing, font, in-text citations, and references.)

Case Study, in which you will address the chosen organization’s health promotion and disease prevention and management strategies. Specifically, you will critique the organization’s healthy living programs, disease prevention and management programs, and non-programmatic services. You will assess the cultural competence of these services using the population health approach. Be sure to consider issues such as how well the organization’s health promotion and management strategies address a wide range of cultural beliefs and whether the organization’s programs and non-programmatic services help to reduce inequalities among members of the population.

II. Health promotion and disease prevention and management strategies 

a) Assess the organization on its efforts to promote healthy living by examining programs (e.g., fitness classes, blood pressure clinics, first aid training, nutrition education, etc.) that it may offer to patients. Be sure to provide evidence to support your claims.

b) How appropriate are the organization’s disease prevention and management programs and services (such as discharge planning, home health services, vaccination services, etc.) for addressing factors that determine population health status? Be sure to provide evidence to support your claims. 

c) Assess non-programmatic services(such as transportation, on-site child care, etc.) that may be offered by the organization for their impact on factors that determine population health status. 

d) Identify gaps or deficiencies that may exist in the organization’s health promotion and disease prevention and management efforts, and provide evidence to support your claims. If you feel there are none, be sure to explain your reasoning

Working in healthcare can be extremely stressful when it comes to patient care, poor outcomes, and traumatic events. On top of this, stress can be exacerbated by incivility, bullying, and workplace violence (Marshall & Broome, 2017). According to Clark et al. (2011), “Incivility in healthcare can lead to unsafe working conditions, poor patient care, and increased medical costs.” Completing the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory gave me some more insight into the civility of my workplace (2015).

Based on The Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, my organization scored a 73. Clark explains that a 73 is associated with a moderately healthy workplace. I would agree my workplace deserves this score, and the description is fitting. My lower scores reflected my “neutral” score in statements that described how management views employees. Marshall and Broome note, incivility can take on many forms, from condescending remarks to refusal to acknowledge a coworker’s need for assistance and can occur between nurses or those in leadership positions (2017, p. 108). For me, the incivility in the work environment often stems from opposition between management and staff. It seems that management does not always value staff nurses. For this reason, the statement, “Employees are viewed as assets and valued partners within the organization,” stuck out to me. It can sometimes seem that nurses are not in control of decisions being made that affect nurses.

Most recently, an event occurred at my workplace that rubbed many staff nurses the wrong way. I work in the emergency department, where we have recently had a massive influx of COVID-19 patients. We have separated our department into a respiratory and medical side. As you can imagine, we screen every patient that enters the department. If they have any respiratory symptoms, they go to the department’s respiratory side and are considered a rule out COVID until otherwise stated by the physician. If they are diagnosed with COVID and need to be admitted, they are admitted to the hospital’s COVID floor. Recently, an email was leaked that stated the nurses on the COVID floor were receiving extra compensation. In contrast, our nurses who were taking care of the same patients who were being admitted were not receiving the additional payment.

From our standpoint, it was extremely frustrating that this information was kept from us, and it made us feel extremely undervalued. It was discouraging to feel our organization was not being transparent, and we were not treated fairly. To address this situation, one of our staff nurses voiced her concerns to our leadership in the emergency department, the emergency department’s administrative director. He was also kept from this knowledge, so he scheduled a meeting with his direct report. From here, the administrators compromised on allowing emergency department nurses to float up to the COVID floor for extra shifts to receive the additional compensation.

While it was not the answer we wanted, it was nice that our administrative director of the emergency department tried to make something happen. It did give me a poor impression of our administrators who are in charge of making these decisions, who neglected to include any representatives from the ER. I do not feel these individuals view me or any other emergency department staff nurses as assets or valued partners with the organization. I think this type of leadership creates more incivility in the workplace.

HH is a 68 yr M who has been admitted to the medical ward with community-acquired pneumonia for the past 3 days. His PMH is significant for COPD, HTN, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. He remains on empiric antibiotics, which include ceftriaxone 1 g IV qday (day 3) and azithromycin 500 mg IV qday (day 3). Since admission, his clinical status has improved, with decreased oxygen requirements. He is not tolerating a diet at this time with complaints of nausea and vomiting.
