Interprofessional Collaboration

 Application of Analytic Methods1

Interprofessional Collaboration

Medication errors can occur in any setting. Much has been done to eliminate this problem, yet there is much more than need be done to provide safe patient care. If I were asked to gather an interprofessional collaborative (IPC) team, in response to a recurring medication error and to prevent future mistakes in the inpatient medical-surgical unit where I work, I would put together a team from different disciplines within the institution. I would gather an IPC team to include members who can contribute to the solution, have expert advice, and who can help lead the change in a quality improvement project. According to Dang and Dearholt, (2018), the IPC team should be precise enough to be effective, yet large enough to have expert knowledge of the presenting problem.  The IPC team would include a pharmacist, nurse educator, nursing manager, unit head nurse, a registered nurse, a physician, an informatics specialist, and a practicing scholar.

The responsibilities of each team member begin by the team coming together, and being prepared to share evidence-based content to help resolve the practice problem. For a team to be effective, the members of that team need to be able to share and understand each other roles (Etherington et al 2019). The role of the IPC members is to understand the impact the practice problem has on patients’ outcome, staff morals, and healthcare cost and to research ways to solve the problem. Members need to be knowledgeable about the topic presented. The team should be committed to the project and should be motivated to resolve the practice focus problem.  I would have weekly meetings with team members to follow up and feedback.

Medication errors are listed under patient safety, which is one of the eighth practice problem burden in the United States of America (Chamberlain College of Nursing 2020). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a medication error can occur during any step of the medication process, from prescribing to administering (2016). Therefore, the team should be looking into all potential medication error aspect. The team leader should distribute tasks accordingly, and hold each team member accountable for the task assigned. The team of ICP shall strategize a plan to prevent medication errors in the unit.

The nurse researcher and educator would establish policies, protocols, and training modules for unit nursing staff. The Informatics specialist will review the current technology and improve the system to identify and create alert as soon as a medication is written by the prescriber. The pharmacist would work within it department to establish a clear protocol for requesting clarification before any questionable medication is dispensed to the unit. The nurse manager and unit team will work on reeducating the staff on safe medication administration. Nursing leaders need to create a culture of confidence among staff, that it is appropriate to question a provider’s order if deemed unsafe.  In a pilot study by Boscart et al., (2017) they found that interprofessional teamwork, education, and open communication promote best practice and improve quality of care in heart failure patients in a long-term care setting. I believe respectful communication among disciplines is beneficial in all clinical practices.

It is well known, that there is no I in team. For a team to be successful it members have to be able to work well alongside each other. Mutual respect for each other opinions is a must for the team to succeed. Ineffective communicating is the root cause of misunderstanding. It happens in personal relationships, boardrooms, and of course in healthcare settings.  Often, the failure to communicate can have life-changing impacts of patients, family, nurses, insurances providers and healthcare systems. Clapper (2018) indicated that debriefing allows team members time to critique performance and discuss ways for improvement. To facilitate effective communication and collaboration, there should be frequent feedback from team members.

Week 7 Discussion Prompt #1 and #2

Read the following case study and answer all of the questions that follow:

TS is 67 years old with a long history of knee osteoarthritis for which he self-medicates regularly with over-the-counter (OTC) naproxen. He is in the clinic today complaining of a swallowing difficulty that has progressively worsened over the past several months. He has otherwise been healthy and has not seen a doctor in many years.

TS denies significant past medical history. A review of systems is negative except for arthritic symptoms and swallowing difficulty. He denies noticing blood in his stool and vomiting blood. He denies history of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and ulcer.

He does not drink alcohol, although he drank heavily many years ago. He does not smoke. TS describes the dysphagia this way: “Food gets stuck in my throat, and I can’t get it down.” The feeling occurs only after he has ingested solid food; liquids are not a problem. There is burning chest pain associated with meals.

He is scheduled for an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

  1. What is the likely cause of his dysphagia?
  2. What advice should TS be given regarding his OTC medication at this time?
  3. What are the usual signs and symptoms of GERD? How will it be managed?
  4. Use scholarly sources for the answers/findings and citations

Read the article, and then answer the questions that follow:

Soriano S., Alonso-Magdalena P., Garcıa-Arevalo M., Novials A., & Muhammed S. J. (2012). Rapid insulinotropic action of low doses of Bisphenol-A on mouse and human islets of langerhans: Role of estrogen receptor b. PLoS ONE 7(2): e31109. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0031109

  1. What are the causes of type 2 diabetes?
  2. What is the relationship between insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia?
  3. What are endocrine disrupters and what are their functions in our body? Provide some examples.
  4. How does concentration of glucose effect insulin secretion?
  5. Explain how data from article support or refute the hypothesis that endocrine disrupters can change insulin secretion.

Be sure to cite the article in text. Paraphrase key points from the article that support your answers.

Assignment: Global Healthcare Comparison Matrix and Narrative Statement

Note: This Assignment is due on Day 5 of Week 11.

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided?

You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures.

Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve.

In this Assignment, you will examine a global health issue and consider the approach to this issue by the United States and by one other country.

To Prepare:

  • Review the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global health agenda and select one global health issue to focus on for this Assignment.
  • Select at least one additional country to compare to the U.S. for this Assignment.
  • Reflect on how the global health issue you selected is approached in the U.S. and in the additional country you selected.
  • Review and download the Global Health Comparison Matrix provided in the Resources.

The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Global Health Comparison Matrix; 1-page Plan for Social Change)

Part 1: Global Health Comparison Matrix

Focusing on the country you selected and the U.S., complete the Global Health Comparison Matrix. Be sure to address the following:

  • Consider the U.S. national/federal health policies that have been adapted for the global health issue you selected from the WHO global health agenda. Compare these policies to the additional country you selected for study.
  • Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each policy.
  • Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the global health issue you selected. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Using the WHO’s Organization’s global health agenda as well as the results of your own research, analyze how each country’s government addresses cost, quality, and access to the global health issue selected.
  • Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the health of the global population. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Explain how the health policy you selected might impact the role of the nurse in each country.
  • Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. Be specific and provide examples.

Part 2: A Plan for Social Change

Reflect on the global health policy comparison and analysis you conducted in Part 1 of the Assignment and the impact that global health issues may have on the world, the U.S., your community, as well as your practice as a nurse leader.

In a 1-page response, create a plan for social change that incorporates a global perspective or lens into your local practice and role as a nurse leader.

  • Explain how you would advocate for the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
  • Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens might impact your local practice and role as a nurse leader.
  • Explain how the incorporation of a global perspective or lens into your local practice as a nurse leader represents and contributes to social change. Be specific and provide examples

By Day 5 of Week 11

Submit Part 1 and Part 2 of your Assignment.

Evidence Base in Design

When politics and medical science intersect, there can be much debate. Sometimes anecdotes or hearsay are misused as evidence to support a particular point. Despite these and other challenges, however, evidence-based approaches are increasingly used to inform health policy decision-making regarding causes of disease, intervention strategies, and issues impacting society. One example is the introduction of childhood vaccinations and the use of evidence-based arguments surrounding their safety.

In this Discussion, you will identify a recently proposed health policy and share your analysis of the evidence in support of this policy.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Congress website provided in the Resources and identify one recent (within the past 5 years) proposed health policy.
  • Review the health policy you identified and reflect on the background and development of this health policy.

Post a description of the health policy you selected and a brief background for the problem or issue being addressed. Explain whether you believe there is an evidence base to support the proposed policy and explain why. Be specific and provide examples.

health determinants

  • Watch the video Health Determinants: A Framework for Reaching Health People 2020 Goals. Reflect on a patient experience where you encountered a health disparity that was a determinant to the patient’s health. In hindsight, was there an opportunity where you should have acted to help eliminate this but did not? Explain. What would you do differently next time you encounter a similar situation?

Qualitative and Quantitative Research Design

Qualitative and quantitative research designs are two different types of data. They both have specific differences that could easily be mistaken for the other. Qualitative research has to do a lot with data that is descriptive and takes into regard a phenomenon that can be observed but not measured, like language, for example (McLeod, 2019).  Quantitative has to do with information about quantities, like numbers for example (McLeod, 2019).

Qualitative research uses a multi method approach (McLeod, 2019). This means that multiple methods can be used to acquire data in regard to a research study. Qualitative research also involves the use of a type of naturalistic and interpretive approach (McLeod, 2019). For example, a group of people that really enjoy using the qualitative research method  are psychologists. The reason why psychologists prefer the use of qualitative research is to understand the social reality of individuals, groups, and cultures in the same way that these individuals feel it or live it (McLeod, 2019). The goal psychologists strive for with qualitative research is to explore and find an explanation to the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of a particular phenomenon or behavior that is occurring in a particular context (McLeod, 2019).

According to the University of Utah, qualitative research is “a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks in-depth understanding of a social phenomena that is within their natural setting (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019).

Quantitative research has a much more different approach and goal than qualitative research does. Quantitative research places an emphasis on the statistical, numerical, and mathematical analysis of data or information that is collected through the use of questionnaires, surveys, polls, or through the manipulation of pre-existing statistical data by using computational techniques (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019).  Quantitative research aims to measure or test a theory of the attitudes of the targeted audience in response to a specific research goal or objective (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019).

In regard to quantitative research, research and data that previously existed must be retained if manipulation were to take place. When it comes to the manipulation of pre-existing data, the researcher must take the retention of the collection of text, writings, and research into consideration when new data is to be added (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019).  Nowadays, in order for this to happen, quantitative research is done frequently online in order to reach a wider audience that is more likely to participate in providing an accurate representation of the views of the targeted population (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019). With the technology that we have nowadays, surveys can be conducted easily and more quickly, just in case there is a time constraint in which the research needs to be completed (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019).

Before conducting any research, one must consider what type of research would be best for their study. Choosing the type of research approach will greatly affect the type of insights that will be generated at the end of the research study (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019). To get a more accurate and concise result, it is best to use the combinations of both qualitative and quantitative research study methods (“Understanding Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research,” 2019).

week 4 discussion

TOPIC: CHILD ABUSE AS A HEALTH ISSUE

In week 4 you will prepare for your ethical and cultural inquiry paper. I have created an outline to follow that requires you to specifically reflect on the evolution of the injustice in a comprehensive way. In the Origin of Injustice section, you will be including a background and discussing several causes of your injustice. In the Money Power and Control section you need to find an organization that benefits from maintain policies that contribute to the injustice. In the cultural section you need to focus on one societal norm that prevents changes. You will also need to find a specific bill or law that impacts your population. Finally, in the ethics section you will need to include concrete evidence that the profession of nursing has an obligation to be active patient advocate in protecting your population from the injustice that goes beyond bedside care. In this discussion board I would like you to come up with an outline that includes the specific topic you will discuss for each section.

  • Origin of Injustice
    • Background: what you will focus on here
    • Causes: list out the causes you will discuss (you may have more than 1)
  • Money power and control: what organization are you going to focus on and how do they maintain power?
  • Legislation: what bill will you discuss?
  • Culture: what social norm will you discuss?
  • Ethical Obligation: what is concrete evidence you will use to support the claim nurses have an obligation to help your population related to this injustice
