Cultural Competence

Cultural competence is “a process for addressing disparities, based on race, ethnicity, and culture” (Isaacs et al., 2005, p. 5). Nurses must be culturally competent to provide effective and therapeutic care for patients.  It is part of a holistic treatment process.

  • How does culture shape an individual’s view of mental health?
  • Discuss why culture competence is important to nursing.
  • What steps can a nurse take to be culturally competent?

4/3-1 change

After working with your preceptor to assess organizational policies, create a list of measurable outcomes for your capstone project intervention. Write a list of three to five outcomes for your proposed intervention. Below each outcome, provide a one or two sentence rationale.

The assignment will be used to develop a written implementation plan.

Psychotherapeutic Approaches to Group Therapy with Children and Adolescents

Post an explanation of the most likely DSM-5 diagnosis for the client in the case study. Be sure to link those behaviors to the criteria in the DSM-5. Then, explain group therapeutic approaches you might use with this client.  Explain expected outcomes for the client based on these therapeutic approaches. Finally consider legal and ethical implications of counseling children and adolescent clients with psychiatric disorders. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

Case analysis

Your case study this week will focus on the following scenario:
Patient is a 24-year-old female administrative assistant who comes to the emergency department with a chief complaint of severe right-sided headache. She states that this is the sixth time in the last 2 months she has had this headache. She says the headaches last 2–3 days and have impacted her ability to concentrate at work. She complains of nausea and has vomited three times in the last 3 hours. She states, “the light hurts my eyes.” She rates her pain as a 10/10 at this time. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen ease her symptoms somewhat but do not totally relieve them. No other current complaints.
Assignment (1- to 2-page case study analysis)
In your Case Study Analysis related to the scenario provided, explain the following:
Both the neurological and musculoskeletal pathophysiologic processes that would account for the patient presenting these symptoms.
Any racial/ethnic variables that may impact physiological functioning.
How these processes interact to affect the patient.

Paper writing

For this journal entry, you will be picking a personal stressor as a touchpoint for the rest of your journal entries. As we learn and explore more about stress management, you will be applying what you learn to better manage this one personal stressor. Further on in the course, you will be asked to apply concepts from the textbook, and explore and use worksheets from your workbook as you work towards managing this one personal stressor in more healthful ways.

To do:

  1. Identify and describe one personal stressor to focus on for the rest of your journal entries
  2. Write about why you picked this stressor, and what you would like to change
  3. Describe how you experience this stress physically, psychologically, spiritually, socially , etc.
  4. Write about anything you have learned so far in class that is helping to raising your awareness and understanding of this stressor.
  5. Pick one of the worksheets from the Peace & Relaxation workbook which you believe will assist you in raising your awareness about this stressor and/or how to address it. Complete the worksheet (you may complete more if you wish) and use this knowledge to build your understanding.
  6. Based upon what you have learned in class so far, what are some ideas you have for creating a plan to manage this stressor in more healthy ways? Be specific — envision some of the change you want to create in your life!

Evidence Translation and Change

Reflect upon the selected practice problem in Weeks 1 and 2 and consider the following. (Obesity was my practice problem in the week 1 and 2)

1-What are the common barriers to evidence translation in addressing this problem?

2-What strategies might you adopt to be aware of new evidence?

3-How will you determine which evidence to implement?

4-How will you ensure continuation or sustainability of the change?

Please answer each question separated and use 3 sources at least no later than 5 years.
