5. Summarize evidence from scholarly articles for incorporation into evidence-based practice (CSLO 5).
Evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing starts with formulating a clear clinical question related to patient care, procedures, or clinical guidlines. Once the question is established, the next step involves searching scholarly databases for the best available evidence, including articles, reviews, and studies. After collecting the evidence, you should check its validity, reliability, and how well it applies to the question. When the evidence is reliable and relevant, researchers combine it with their knowledge for evaluation. Finally, evaluating the intervention’s outcomes is needed to determine its effectiveness. By following these steps, researchers can enhance the quality of care through evidence-based practice.
Throughout this course, I believe I have achieved this outcome through various activities and assignments. For instance, in our weekly discussion posts, we critically appraised various research articles, assessing their validity, reliability, and applicability to clinical practice. This not only helped me understand the critical appraisal process but also allowed me to apply these skills in a practical setting. Furthermore, in our research projects, we were tasked with identifying a clinical question, searching for evidence, critically appraising the evidence, and applying it to a scenario. These projects allowed me to apply the skills I learned in a comprehensive manner, further solidifying my understanding of EBP.
