Find the Premises

Due: Sunday night at 11:59pm Mountain Time

In this assignment, you will examine sample arguments and identify the premises.

Before starting this assignment watch a brief video about what a podcast is (Links to an external site.).

Step 1: Consider the scenario:

You are the primary contributor for Low Cost Foodies, a nationally syndicated podcast specializing in the current affairs of the fast food industry. Listeners value the Low Cost Foodies for their insider knowledge and lighthearted banter. Your writing partners are out reporting for an upcoming episode and will not be able to help in the scripting process this week. Accordingly, you have been tasked with managing the entire script of this week’s podcast on the premises and hidden premises in the fast food industry.

Step 2: Review assignment requirements.

Introduce the Low Cost Foodies audience to the concepts of premise and hidden premise. These can be found everywhere in the fast food industry, but it takes some understanding and careful attention to identify them. In a two-page (500-word) podcast script, composed of two separate segments, explore the notions of premise. In Segment 1, “Spot the Premise,” identify the premise (or hidden premise) of each conclusion provided below. This information will be useful for Segment 2, “Defending the Premises,” in which you provide a more in-depth analysis into the aforementioned conclusions.

Podcast Segment 1: Spot the Premise

  • Everyone I know likes Chick-a-Cola. It must be really good!
  • I can’t believe the McDonald’s VP is voting to cut employee benefits. He must be in the president’s pocket.
  • If a restaurant is crowded, then people love the menu. The restaurant is crowded. People must love the new menu.
  • Industrialized cattle farms are immoral because they murder animals.
  • The fast food industry is in turmoil. The poor economy has brought down consumer spending, so the fast food industry is going to collapse.

Podcast Segment 2: Defending the Premises

  • Do the assumptions really support the conclusion? Why or why not?
  • Identify which of the premises use deductive reasoning and which use inductive reasoning. What characteristics define deduction? What defines induction?
  • How can assumptions inform the premise of an argument?
  • Contrast the principal differences between explicitly expressed and tacitly implied premises. Which of the conclusions have explicitly expressed or tacitly implied premises?
  • Explain the effect explicit and implicit assumptions have on the final conclusion.

Step 3: Write a podcast script.

Using the HUM330 podcast script templatePreview the document

write a two-segment podcast script (500 words minimum) that meets the topical requirements listed in Step 1. Format your entry in the following manner:

  • All podcast scripts should be contained within one document.
  • Label each script with the segment title provided in the entry requirements.
  • At the end of the script, cite the sources you used to complete it.

Remember, you are writing for a varied listening audience of fast food lovers. It is important that you exhibit superior knowledge of the subjects being covered while still packaging the materials in a way that is fun and engaging for the Low Cost Foodies audience. They should be excited to hear your podcast material. Follow these guidelines to further engage the listening audience:

  • Use clear, concise sentences.
  • Use clear and relatable real-world examples to help explain concepts.
  • Use language intended for a listener as opposed to a reader. For example, avoid language such as “As you can see…”
  • Share your enthusiasm and interest in the subject matter.
  • Relate the material back to your own personal experience when possible.
  • Read the entry out loud to yourself before finalizing it.

Step 4: When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place.

Cite any sources in APA format.

Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

As their names imply, the honeyguide bird and the honey badger both share an affinity for honey. Honeyguide birds specialize in finding beehives but struggle to access the honey within. Honey badgers are well-equipped to raid beehives but cannot always find them. However, these two honey-loving species have learned to collaborate on an effective means to meet their objectives. The honeyguide bird guides honey badgers to newly discovered hives. Once the honey badger has ransacked the hive, the honey guide bird safely enters to enjoy the leftover honey.

Much like honeyguide birds and honey badgers, nurses and health professionals from other specialty areas can—and should—collaborate to design effective programs. Nurses bring specialties to the table that make them natural partners to professionals with different specialties. When nurses take the requisite leadership in becoming involved throughout the healthcare system, these partnerships can better design and deliver highly effective programs that meet objectives.

In this Assignment, you will practice this type of leadership by advocating for a healthcare program. Equally as important, you will advocate for a collaborative role of the nurse in the design and implementation of this program. To do this, assume you are preparing to be interviewed by a professional organization/publication regarding your thoughts on the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.

To Prepare:

· Review the Resources and reflect on your thinking regarding the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.

· Select a healthcare program within your practice and consider the design and implementation of this program.

· Reflect on advocacy efforts and the role of the nurse in relation to healthcare program design and implementation.

The Assignment: (4-5 pages)

In a 4 5-page paper, create an interview transcript of your responses to the following interview questions:

· Tell us about a healthcare program, within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?

· Who is your target population?

· What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Can you provide examples?

· What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?

· What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?

· Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?

Isaac has worked as a staff nurse on the telemetry floor for over 15 years. He holds seniority in the unit. His patient care is satisfactory; however, his interpersonal behaviors are becoming an increasing issue for his coworkers. He throws papers around the unit, gives short answers to questions, and seems generally miserable. He tells the staff that they are lazy and stupid. He is constantly questioning their decisions. You have come from another local hospital in the role of the assistant nurse manager. Based on your observations, you have met with Isaac informally and discussed his behaviors, but they have not changed. Now three new nurses have already come to you saying that this unit is a great match for them, except for one problem. Although they have not identified Isaac by name, they have told you that one of the nurses is extremely abusive verbally, and they have been calling in sick on the days they are scheduled to work with this person.

1. What are your responsibilities as an assistant nurse manager in regard to Isaac’s behavior problem?

2. What is the next step in dealing with Isaac’s behaviors?

3. How will you, as the manager, have Isaac develop more effective people skills?

This is your first position as a nurse manager. The holidays are rapidly approaching, and the hospital policy states that each unit will negotiate holiday coverage individually. You are already getting requests via e-mail and on Post-it notes for holiday time. Several staff members have come to you stating that they “never” seem to get their requests for holidays. Discussion among the staff members is creating dissension and conflict.

1. Discuss the potential impact of this problem on you and the unit staff.

2. Describe a minimum of one positive consequence and one negative consequence of this conflict.

3. Select a model of conflict resolution and explain how you, as a nurse manager, might resolve this conflict.

PRINCIPLES OF EPIDEMIOLOGY

TOPIC: Measuring Morbidity: Prevalence and Incidence

Read the scenario below and complete the assignment as instructed.

Scenario

In Community X (population 20,000), an epidemiologist conducted a prevalence survey in January of 2012 and reported an HIV prevalence of 2.2%. Over the next 12 months, the department of health reported an additional 50 new HIV cases between February 2012 and January 2013. The total population stayed constant at 20,000.

Part 1

  1. How many people had HIV in January 2012? Present or describe the formula you used to arrive at your answer.
  2. Calculate the incidence rate assuming no HIV-related deaths over the 12-month period. Present or describe the formula you used to arrive at your answer. Be sure to clearly indicate the numerator and      denominator used in your calculation and include an appropriate label for the rate.

In a summary of 200-250 words, interpret the results and discuss the relationship between incidence and prevalence. Discuss whether or not the epidemiologist should be concerned about these new HIV infections, assuming a previous incidence rate of 0.5 per 1,000 person-years prior to this updated risk assessment.

Part 2

A rapid test used for diagnosing HIV has a sensitivity of 99.1% and a specificity of 90%. Based on the population prevalence of 2.2% in 2012, create a 2×2 table showing the number of true positives, false positives, false negatives, and true negatives. Calculate the positive predicative value and negative predictive value for this test. Refer to the “Creating a 2×2 Contingency Table” resource for guidance.

In 200-250 words, discuss whether or not the epidemiologist should recommend this test as part of a universal HIV screening program. Provide rationale for your recommendation applying the positive and negative predictive values. Present or describe the formula you used to arrive at your answer.
