Discussion theory 7

A 23-year-old male patient is admitted with a fracture of C6 and C7 that has resulted in quadriplegia. He was injured during a football game at the university where he is currently a senior. His career as a quarterback had been very promising. At the time of the injury, contract negotiations were in progress with a leading professional football team.

1. Use Roy’s criteria to identify focal and contextual stimuli for each of the four adaptive modes.

2. Consider what adaptations would be necessary in each of the following four adaptive modes: (1) physiological, (2) self-concept, (3) interdependence, and (4) role function.

3. Create a nursing intervention for each of the adaptive modes to promote adaptation.

Self Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention

Description:
In this vignette, a patient expresses her concern that her estrogen treatments, combined with her family history of breast cancer, may increase her chances of developing breast cancer. This vignette highlighted various aspects of the health of LGBT and gender nonconforming populations and is designed to give learners the opportunity to analyze clinician-patient communication strategies.

Learning Objectives:
By the completion of this vignette/vignette series, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify three strategies to engage LGBT patients in the clinical environment.
  • Discuss methods to sensitively approach history taking and physical examination with LGBT patients.
  • Describe three verbal or non-verbal strategies to identify sexual orientation and gender identity in the clinical environment.
  • Describe three unique risk factors for health conditions related to sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • Outline three techniques for tailoring health promotion strategies to the needs of LGBT patients.

 1. What questions did the clinician ask to assess this patient’s risk for developing breast cancer? Are there any additional questions you would have asked? should be a minimum of 250 words with three references in correct APA format.

2. How effectively did the clinician address the patient’s concerns about estrogen risk? What do you think about the safety of estrogen risk? What do you think about the safety estrogen prescription in a transgender patient at high risk for breast cancer? should be a minimum of 150 words with two references in correct APA format.

Strategies for Academic Portfolios

In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.

Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on strategies that you can pursue in developing portfolios or portfolio elements that focus on academic achievements.
  • Review one or more samples from your own research of resources focused on portfolio development.

Post an explanation of at least two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into your professional development goals. Then, explain how those goals may align with the University’s emphasis on social change. Be specific and provide examples.

Discussion board

In this module we are learning about how stress and violence can impact families. I want you to take a moment to think about all that you have to be thankful for. Often we take for granted the resources that we have at our fingertips. Take a moment to think of the families that have been ripped apart by war, like those in the middle East or Africa or violent crime and corruption in Central America. These families are fleeing their homes that have been reduced to rubble with little to nothing. No promise of food or a warm, safe place to sleep at night, just hope that someone will help them find a safe place for their children to live.

Take a moment to put yourself in their shoes. What if your family was in this position? How would you feel? What would you do? I can only imagine the extreme amount of stress and hopelessness that these parents feel.

These crises have been turned in to political fodder as of late. Yes, we need to be vigilant about protecting ourselves, but we also need to think about our fellow mankind that just want the same things for their children that we do. We are all human, regardless of where we are born or where we live.

The goal of this weeks DB is not to get in to a political debate, but rather to take the perspective of some of these families. What do they go through, and what do they have to do to escape? Lastly, I hope to encourage empathy. Remember, one of the overarching goals of this course is to build kind, caring communities. So, how would you feel if you were a refugee fleeing a war torn country, and what would you do?

For this module’s Discussion Board post I’d like you to look at the following websites. Read these pages:

When you are done reading these websites you have a choice about what to post on. Pick one of these below.

1. Search for the story about an immigrant family from a war torn country. This does not have to be a peer reviewed article, but you do need to provide a proper APA citation and reference. The family doesn’t have to be from Syria. Read about the family or watch a video. Describe what you have learned in your post and what you feel could have been done to better help this family escape violence (include links or citations to your sources). Be sure to refer back to the course material for this week linking this topic with what you have learned from the readings (including a reference and citation) as well as a small personal reflection. Stress has a horrible impact on families and developing children, so linking the material should be easy.

OR

2. Do an internet search for the criteria that families must meet seeking asylum/refugee status in a country other than their own. I’m hoping there is a wide representation of the globe here, so move out of your comfort zone and try not to pick the USA. Your source does not have to be peer reviewed, but I would highly suggest you search for government websites, not blogs. Find out what the immigration requirements are for these families in the country that you are researching and report back on them. Describe the process and resources for these families and the requirements they have to meet in order to immigrate to that country (include citations and references for your sources). Be sure to refer back to the course material for this week linking this topic with what you have learned from the readings (including a reference and citation) as well as a small personal reflection.

I want to reiterate that this is not to be a political exercise or argument. I simply want to provide you with an opportunity to take the perspective of others and become informed on the often extreme measures that one has to take to escape a place where their lives are being torn apart.

Letters/Emails to a Legislator

Public policy has a major impact on your practice and your patients. Advocacy is an expectation of the advanced practice nurse. Elected officials care about what their constituents have to say. To make a difference, you need to be informed and engaged. Contacting your legislator and discussing issues is an important attribute of nurse leaders. In your interactions with lawmakers you want to be positive and nonpartisan, personal, persistent, patient, focused on your message, and provide accurate information.

Directions

  1. Determine the issue or message (e.g., telehealth impact on your practice) you wish to discuss with your legislator(s). Resource: The American Nurses Association Federal Legislative Priorities for 2019.
  2. Identify your legislator and contact information from his or her website and/or search here.
  3. Method of Advocacy: Letter/ Email.
  • Letter or Email: The student must write three (3) letters or emails or a combination of letters/emails to their identified legislators (State of California and/or Federal). The letters/emails may be the same topic to three different legislators or three different topics to three different legislators. Legislators read correspondence, especially when it is personalized and clearly from a constituent. The following guidelines should be used when writing to your representative:
    1. Be brief (one page or less), and use your own words.
    2. Begin with the appropriate heading and address.
    3. Be specific: State the specific bill number and issue and state your opinion in the first sentence.
    4. Relate your experience with the issue. Use personal examples when possible. Your interest and concern about the issue is important.
    5. Ask the legislator to specifically commit to supporting or opposing the legislation you are writing about.
    6. Ask for specific reasons they are supporting or opposing the proposal.
    7. Sign and print your name and include your address and other contact information.
    8. If you have pertinent materials and/or editorials from local papers, include them.
    9. Cite any references at the end of the letter or email usingAPA format.
    10. Avoid form letters/emails if possible. If you are using a sample or form letter, be sure to adapt it, especially in the first sentence and paragraph.  Legislators and their aides recognize form letters and are less likely to be influenced by them.
    11. Thank him or her for considering your opinion.
    12. Submit the three letters and/or emails in Word docs in the D2L assignment link along with a separate one-page reflection on your experience.
