The Meat Lady Dilemma

Mrs Parker owns and operates a meat shop that processes and packages parcels of minced meat that is being sold to schools in the US. Her scales are all calibrated to perform measurement in pounds, however when the parcels are packaged, they need to be labelled in ounces. Mrs Parker has established that 1 pound is equivalent to 16 ounces. In each production cycle, 250 packs of meat are processed and the weight in pounds varies for each package. Mrs Parker is also interested in knowing the total costs, the total revenue and the total profit of each production run, given that the costs to produce and package an ounce of meat is US $0.25 and that the selling price of an ounce of meat is US $0.55. Because you are a budding Software Engineer, she has sought your assistance in creating a software solution that can be used within the business establishment.

Required: A. Specifically identify the type of control structure which is needed to process the meat in each production run and provide a reason for your choice (4 marks)

B. Your solution needs to represent the meat packages which are to be processed, how would you represent this appropriately in your program and what has guided your choice?  (4 marks)

C. Construct a C# program that will solve Mrs Parker’s dilemma by making use of the choices made above.

i. Implementation of the control structure to process the meat (2 marks)

ii. Implementation of the meat packages to be processed (2 marks)

iii. Calculation of costs, revenues, and profits (6 marks)

iv. Appropriate program outputs displayed to the user

Prim's Algorithm

The problem we can solve using a priority queue is that of computing a minimum spanning tree. Given a fully connected undirected graph where each edge has a weight, we would like to find the set of edges with the least total sum of weights. Using the scenario:

You are an engineer and you are trying to figure out the best way to arrange for internet access in your Town. There are N (3 ≤ N ≤ 25) blocks in your town connected by M (N ≤ M ≤ 25) various streets and you can walk between any two streets in the town by traversing some sequence of roads.

However, you have got a limited budget and have determined that the cheapest way to arrange for internet access is to build some fiber-optic cables along existing roadways. You have a list of the costs of laying fiber-optic cable down along any particular street, and want to figure out how much money you will need to successfully complete the project, meaning that, at the end, every street will be connected along some sequence of fiber-optic cables.

As a computer scientist, you heard about Prim’s algorithm in one of your programming classes. This algorithm is exactly the solution to your problem, but it requires a priority queue.

· Write a program to create using a priority queue to implement a solution of Prim’s algorithm.

Input data describing the graph will be arranged as a list of edges (streets and their fiber-optic cost) and for the program we will covert that to an adjacency list: for every node in the graph in the town, we will have a list of the nodes (streets) it’s connected to and the weight (cost of building fiber-optic cable along).

adj[0] → (1, 1.0) (3, 3.0)

adj[1] → (0, 1.0) (2, 6.0) (3, 5.0) (4, 1.0) . . .

asignment

FORENSIC DESIGN ASSESSMENTS

This task relates to a sequence of assessments that will be repeated across Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Select any example of a visualisation or infographic, maybe your own work or that of others. The task is to undertake a deep, detailed ‘forensic’ like assessment of the design choices made across each of the five layers of the chosen visualisation’s anatomy. In each case your assessment is only concerned with one design layer at a time.

For this task, take a close look at the interactivity choices:

  1. Start by identifying all the interactive features deployed, listing them under the headers of either data or presentation adjustments
  2. How suitable are the choices and deployment of these interactive features? If they are not, what do you think they should have been?
  3. Go through the set of ‘Influencing factors’ from the latter section of the book’s chapter to help shape your assessment and to possibly inform how you might tackle this design layer differently
  4. Also, considering the range of potential interactive features and functions, what would you do differently or additionally?
