After reading Littlejohn’s “On Cultivation Theory” reading and the corresponding info in this week’s Lecture Post, answer the following questions in 100 words or more:

Do you agree with the basic premise of Gerbner’s cultivation theory? In other words, does the entertainment media shape or “cultivate” how people view the world? At times, can there be a link between the media’s content and the beliefs, actions, and/or behavior of the viewers?

Is television, as Gerbner believed, our most persuasive entertainment medium?

Finally, do you think the media, specifically fictionalized programming, can still create what Gerbner called the “mean world syndrome” in 2021?

Cite examples of television programming to support your opinions. Also, be sure to reinforce your views by going deeper and answering “why?” or “why not?”

Database – Discussions

Create a discussion thread (with your name) and answer the following question(s):

Discussion 1 (Chapter 9): Discuss the correspondences between the ER model constructs and the relational model constructs. Show how each ER model construct can be mapped to the relational model, and discuss any alternative mappings?

Instructions:  Your response to the initial question should be 250-300 words.  Next respond to two postings provided by your classmates. The first post should be made by Wednesday 11:59 p.m., EST. I am looking for active engagement in the discussion.  Please engage early and often. You are require to create your initial thread in order to view and respond to the threads posted by other students.  There must be at least one APA formatted reference (and APA in-text citation) to support the thoughts in the post as needed.  Do not use direct quotes, rather rephrase the author’s words and continue to use in-text citations.

Discussion Question

Much cybercrime focuses on the theft of personal information. Identity theft is a major issue, and organizations must take diligent actions to prevent individuals’ personally identifiable information (PII) from being compromised. Likewise, individuals must take precautions to protect their PII.

  • Describe the federal laws that address protecting an individual’s PII.
  • Suggest governmental changes that need to take place and three measures organizations and individuals should take to protect their PII.

 Student reply

Hello Class,

After reading the chapter for this week’s discussion, I had not thought about the Bill of Rights as one of the federal laws in protecting an individual’s personally identifiable information (PII).  The fourth amendment states that every person has a right to privacy. Three acts that protect PII are The Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Right to Financial Privacy Act, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.   There are many other federal and state laws besides the ones mentioned above that protect PII.

The government should continue to write laws that protect PII and make sure the rules are clear and concise.  They should also keep up to date with the advancements of technology.  The government should also be accountable for the laws that are passed and not violate them either.  Three measures organizations and individuals should make sure all their PII are stored safely, only share what is needed to keep the information protected.

Thanks,

Samantha Kemble

Cloud Security Application

Microsoft adheres to a defense-in-depth principle to ensure protection of its cloud services, such as Microsoft Office 365. Built-in security features include threat protection to reduce malware infections, phishing attacks, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, and other types of security threats.

Answer the following question(s):

  1. Would an organization need to apply security controls to allow safe use of those applications? Why or why not?

Lab 1 Assignment: Binary Numbers CASE: You are attending a math conference with your fellow classmates. You see several individuals wearing t-shirts  with the following saying: “THERE ARE 10 Kinds of people. Those who understand  BINARY and those who DON’T.”  TASK: 1. Create a new word processing document and save it as Binary Numbers. 2. In the first paragraph, explain what the binary number system is and how it is simply another way of  describing an amount. 3. Add a table to your document that is two columns wide by five rows long. Add the following headings  to the columns: Decimal Number and Binary Number. Add the following numbers to the first  column, under Decimal number: 8, 25, 136, 1492. 4. Complete the rest of the information in the table without using a calculator. 5. Create another table in the document. This one should be two columns wide and seven rows long. The  column headings are Decimal Number and Binary Number. In the Decimal column, type the numbers  25 through 30. Use the Windows calculator to convert the decimal numbers to their binary equivalents,  and then enter the results in the table. 6. Below the table add a second paragraph that explains the t-shirt quote.

Exercise G. health club system

———————————

Create a set of use cases for the following health club membership system: When members join the

health club, they pay a fee for a certain length of time.  Most memberships are for one year, but memberships as short as two months are available. Throughout the year, the health club offers a variety of discounts on  its regular membership prices (e.g.,two memberships for the price of one for Valentine’s Day).  It is common for members to pay different amounts for the same length of membership.

The club wants to mail out reminder letters to members asking them to renew their memberships one month before their memberships expire. Some members have become angry when asked to renew at a much higher rate than their original membership contract, so that the club wants to track the price paid so that the manager can override the regular prices with special prices when members are asked to renew. The system must track these new prices so that renewals can be processed accurately. One of the problems in the health club industry is the high turnover rate of members. While some members remain active for many years, about half of the members do not renew their memberships. This is a major problem because the health club spends a lot in advertising to attract each new member. The manager wants the system to track each time a member comes into the club. The system will then identify the heavy users and generate a report so that the manager can ask them to renew their memberships early, perhaps offering them a reduced rate for early renewal. Likewise, the system should identify members who have not visited the club in more than a month so that the manager can call them and attempt to reinterest them in the club.

2. For each field in the four tables, answer the following specific questions:

a) Is this a question field, an answer field, or a link field? In other words, is this a key dimension along which I wish to analyze the data (question field), a data item that I want to “slice and dice” along selected dimensions (answer field), or a field that simply helps me link from one table to another?

b) What data type is represented by this field (e.g. integer, text, symbols, currency, etc.)?

c) Are there missing or null values in the data for this field?

d) For range fields (e.g. dates and numbers), what is the range of values in the data? What are the maximum and minimum values?

e) What do you think is the purpose of this field?

f) What questions would you ask the company about this field?
