Chapter 8

Review Question #4 on page 261 and then answer the following question:

The new age of technology presents many opportunities for litigation. The Internet is no exception. When operating Internet websites, an important part of it is owning the domain name (www.example.com). Anyone in the world can own any domain name that is available and the facts of this case arise from this concept.

The plaintiff, in this case, Weather Underground Corporation (Weather Underground), a Michigan corporation, is a commercial weather service. It owns and operates several domain names so that people can access their company through their websites. Defendants, in this case, Navigation Catalyst Systems, Incorporated (“NCS”), a Delaware corporation, owns many domain names that are similar to the plaintiff’s company name (some would result from people misspelling the correct domain name for Weather Underground). NCS profits from consumers going to one of these websites and clicking on links that are on them.

Plaintiff filed suit against NCS and several of its companies in the District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. As defendants were not incorporated in Michigan, the issue of personal jurisdiction arise. The courts of appeals have held that in order to establish specific personal jurisdiction (showing that this company has established contacts with the forum state), one must show three things: (1) the defendant purposefully availed himself of the privilege of acting in the forum state, (2) the cause of action arises from the defendant’s activities there, and (3) the defendant’s acts were so substantial as to make the exercise of personal jurisdiction there reasonable.

The district court is considering whether the exercise of personal jurisdiction is proper. What should it decide and why?

Weather Underground Inc. v. Navigation Catalyst Sys. Inc., No. 09–10756, 2009 WL 3818191 (E.D. Mich. Nov. 13, 2009).

The district court is considering whether the exercise of personal jurisdiction is proper. What should it decide and why?

Use at least three sources. Use the Research Databases available from the Danforth Library not Google. Include at least 3 quotes from your sources enclosed in quotation marks and cited in-line by reference to your reference list.  Example: “words you copied” (citation) These quotes should be one full sentence not altered or paraphrased. Do not use attachments as a submission.

Reply to two classmates’ posting in a paragraph of at least five sentences by asking questions, reflecting on your own experience, challenging assumptions, pointing out something new you learned, offering suggestions. These peer responses are not ‘attaboys’.   You should make your initial post by Thursday evening so your classmates have an opportunity to respond before Sunday.at midnight when all three posts are due.

It is important that you use your own words, that you cite your sources, that you comply with the instructions regarding length of your post and that you reply to two classmates in a substantive way (not ‘nice post’ or the like).  Your goal is to help your colleagues write better. Do not use spinbot or other word replacement software. It usually results in nonsense and is not a good way to learn anything. . I will not spend a lot of my time trying to decipher nonsense. Proof read your work or have it edited. Find something interesting and/or relevant to your work to write about.  Please do not submit attachments unless requested.

Python coding

Question 1: Greetings Function! (4 points)

Start with the greeting program, the first program with functions we  used in Python Tutor. This time, the computer is very happy to meet  you.  Modify the function to return the user’s name in uppercase, with  !!!! after it.  So, if the user’s name is Miriam, the greeting function  will return ‘HELLO MIRIAM!!!!’

Question 2: Quiz question function (6 points)

Write a function that takes two arguments – a quiz question and the correct answer.

In your function, you will print the question, and ask the user for  the answer. If the user gets the answer correct, print a success  message. Else, print a message with the correct answer.   Your function  does not need to return anything.

Call your function with two example quiz questions.   Here’s some suggestions,

  • Q: What year did Apollo 11 land on the moon? A: 1969
  • Q: Who painted the Mona Lisa? A: Leonardo da Vinci

Question 3: Windows 10 Upgrade (10 points)

When installing Windows 10, a user can either wipe everything from  their computer and do a clean install.  Or if their computer meets  system requirements, the user can upgrade to Windows 10 without erasing  their current operating system.

To do the upgrade, according to Microsoft, a computer needs to have  at least 1GB of memory, and at least 1GHz processor, and either Windows 7  or Windows 8 currently installed.   All three requirements must be  met.

Write a program that asks the user for

  • The current memory in their computer, in GB.  (For example, a user with 8GB of memory would enter 8)
  • The current processor speed, in GHz. (For example, a user with a 2.6GHz processor should enter 2.6)
  • The name of their current operating system. (For example, a user could enter Windows 8 or Windows 7 or Windows XP)

Write a can_upgrade function that takes three arguments, the amount of memory, the processor speed, and current operating system.

In can_upgrade, use conditions to figure out if the  user’s computer can be upgraded to Windows 10 or not.  Your function  should return one of the Boolean values True (if the computer can be  upgraded) or False (if it can’t be upgraded).

Call your can_upgrade function from main(), and use the return value to print a message to the user telling them if they can, or can’t, upgrade.

Extra Credit Question: (+5 points)

Start with the College ID card program from https://gist.github.com/claraj/b993219477d015d58341c4f3c1950a22.  This has no functions but it would benefit from being re-organized into  functions. Refactor this program. Suggestions – functions for  validation, functions to help print the college ID card, for example  printing a line of —-, printing centered text, printing text in  color.

Tableau project

The purpose of this project is to give you experience working in Tableau to build interactive dashboards. The data provided comes from LendingClub.com. Each row represents a $25 investment (called a “note”) in a loan. You have a lot of information about each note and the borrower – a majority of which you will not need. A data dictionary is provided, though it appears to not cover everything in the data. If you are unsure about something, make an assumption and proceed. You can go any way you want with this data to show anything you think is worth looking at. I encourage you to be creative. You will be graded on the overall quality of your resulting dashboard and work completed. Submissions SUBMIT A .TWBX FILE, NOT A .TWB FILE! You can do this via File – Save As – and selecting Tableau Packaged Workbook (TWBX) as the file type.
